NFL Week 8 Opening Lines: Bengals Are the Biggest Favorite, and the Bills-Ravens Total Is Already Climbing

The Week 8 betting board is up, and the opening numbers already carry real information for fantasy lineups. The Cincinnati Bengals opened as the week's biggest favorite, roughly 10 to 10.5 points over the Tennessee Titans. The Buffalo-Baltimore total opened at 51.5 and moved to 53.5 at several books before a single injury report, a strong hint that the market expects Lamar Jackson back. And the NFL's last unbeaten team, Minnesota, opened as an underdog in Detroit. Here is what the early lines say, and how to translate them into start/sit decisions.

The board at a glance

These are the reported opening and early numbers for the most fantasy-relevant games. Prices vary by book, so where outlets disagreed, the range is shown.

Bengals over Titans: the stack and the fade

A double-digit spread tells fantasy managers two things: Cincinnati is expected to lead, and Tennessee is expected to chase. That points toward the Bengals' passing game early and the Bengals' backfield late. Joe Burrow just threw four second-half touchdown passes in a 35-13 win over Baltimore, and Tee Higgins was a central part of that surge. Both are confident starts in the most lopsided matchup of the week, according to the market.

The Tennessee side is more nuanced. Large underdogs pass more, which can create garbage-time volume for Cam Ward's receivers even in a loss. Ward himself is a low-end superflex start. The Titans' run game is the clearest fade: negative game scripts erase early-down carries.

Bills-Ravens: the total is the story

A two-point jump on a total before the first practice report is unusual, and it reflects one thing: the market expects Lamar Jackson to return from his high ankle sprain. Ravens coach Jesse Minter said Monday that Jackson is in a decent spot to play, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported he is likely to suit up.

At 53.5, this is one of the highest totals on the board, which makes it the premium DFS game environment of the week if Jackson is cleared. Josh Allen is a must-start regardless. The pass-catchers on both sides get a bump, and both lead backs become more appealing in a game expected to feature plenty of scoring. If Jackson is ruled out, expect the total to fall sharply, and downgrade the Ravens' receivers accordingly.

Patriots-Dolphins: a big number in a division game

New England opened as a 7.5-point favorite at some books and 8.5 at others, a full point of disagreement that suggests the market has not settled on how to rate this matchup. The Patriots lost 30-24 to Chicago on Thursday night in Week 7 but get extra rest, while Miami's quarterback situation remains the variable that moves this line most.

For fantasy, a large spread favors the Patriots' backfield, especially in the second half. Dolphins pass-catchers are volume plays only if Miami falls behind early.

Vikings at Lions and Falcons at Buccaneers

Minnesota is 6-0 but has scored just 10 offensive touchdowns, which is why the market prefers Detroit at home despite the records. The fantasy read is that the Vikings' offense faces the league's worst yardage defense and is a prime candidate for touchdown regression. Start Kyler Murray, Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson with confidence.

Falcons-Buccaneers is a near pick'em with a 46.5 total. Atlanta is coming off Michael Penix Jr.'s three-touchdown game in a win that handed San Francisco its first loss, with Bijan Robinson's workload still climbing. Tampa Bay just ran for 258 yards against Carolina while Baker Mayfield threw only 11 passes. That game plan will not repeat against a better run defense, which makes the Buccaneers' receivers and Mayfield more appealing this week than last.

How to use opening lines in fantasy

Implied team totals are the best quick tool. Take half the total and add half the spread for the favorite's expected points, or subtract half the spread for the underdog. A 47.5 total with a 3.5-point spread implies roughly 25.5 points for the favorite and 22 for the underdog. Teams projected for more than 26 points are the best places to find touchdown upside; teams projected under 20 are where flex plays go to die.

Line movement is information. The Bills-Ravens total jump came before practice reports. When a number moves early, it is usually the market reacting to an expected roster change, not random noise.

Big spreads favor running backs on the favorite and receivers on the underdog. That rule of thumb is especially relevant in the Bengals and Patriots games this week.

The Verdexed angle

Opening lines are the market's first draft. Verdexed's game model builds its own win probabilities independently and compares them with the market to identify edges. The official Week 8 picks, including the probabilities and the model's disagreements with these numbers, will be posted at /blog/nfl-week-8-picks-2026 and on the NFL predictions page once the injury picture settles.

What's next

Wednesday's practice reports will move several of these numbers, with Jackson's status the biggest swing. Thursday night's Panthers-Packers game kicks off the week, and the 49ers, Texans, Giants and Saints are on bye, so plan lineups with those absences in mind.
