Aaron Judge Is Back and the Yankees Are Four Games Behind Tampa Bay With Under Three Weeks Left
By Verdexed MLB Desk

Aaron Judge returned to the Yankees lineup Tuesday night in a 5-3 win over Colorado, his first game since a stress fracture in his rib sidelined him at the end of May. He was activated off the injured list on September 7 without a minor league rehab assignment. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and a flyout before being pulled after six innings, and he received an extended ovation in his first plate appearance.
Judge missed 82 games. The Yankees sit second in the American League East, four games behind Tampa Bay, and hold the first AL wild card with a three-game cushion over Boston.
What a returning superstar actually changes in September
The instinct is to treat a healthy Judge as a transformative addition to a playoff race, and over a full season that is correct. Over seventeen or eighteen remaining games, the arithmetic is more modest. A hitter of Judge's caliber is worth roughly one additional win over a replacement-level outfielder across a three-week stretch, and the Yankees are four games back.
The division is not the point. The wild card position is, and there Judge's value compounds differently. A three-game lead over Boston with under three weeks remaining is a lead that survives most bad weeks, and adding the best hitter in the sport to a lineup that has been getting by without him mostly protects that lead rather than extending it.
The real value of the return is October. A Yankees roster with Judge in the middle of the order is a genuinely different postseason opponent than one without him, and that is where the market has not fully adjusted.
The rust question is real and short
Judge did not take a rehab assignment. That was a deliberate choice by a player and a team who decided that live major league at-bats were a better use of the remaining calendar than minor league reps. It is defensible, and it is also why the first week back should be treated with some caution.
A hitter returning from three months away without game reps typically shows the effects in swing decisions before he shows them in contact quality. Watch chase rate and first-pitch aggression rather than batting average. A player whose plate discipline returns quickly is a player whose production follows within a week or two.
The rib injury itself carries a specific concern that a hamstring or oblique would not: rib stress fractures are load injuries, and the load in question is the swing. Any recurrence would be catastrophic for New York's October, and the Yankees will manage his exposure accordingly, which is why he came out after six innings in his first game back.
The AL East math
Tampa Bay leads by four with the calendar running out. Magic number tracking has both the Rays and the Yankees close to clinching postseason berths, which reflects how much separation the top of the American League has created from the teams below it.
For the Yankees, the division would require Tampa Bay to lose roughly two-thirds of its remaining games while New York wins at a similar clip in the opposite direction. That is a low-probability path, and the Yankees should be, and probably are, playing for seeding within the wild card rather than for the East.
Boston is the team that matters most to New York's remaining schedule. A three-game lead for the first wild card is comfortable but not safe, and the difference between the first and second wild card is home field in a three-game series.
The Verdexed model take
The betting angle is on the Yankees' World Series price rather than on any individual game. Futures markets adjust to injury news slowly and to injury returns more slowly still, because the return is priced as a probability weeks before it happens and then never fully re-rated when it occurs.
A Yankees roster that has Judge for the entire postseason is meaningfully stronger than the roster the market was pricing in August. If the World Series number has not shortened since September 7, it is stale.
On the daily board, the opposite caution applies. Do not overpay for Yankees run lines in the next week. A returning star hitting sixth or being pulled after six innings does not move a team's run-scoring distribution the way the headline suggests, and books will price the name rather than the usage.
Fantasy fallout
For managers still alive in head-to-head leagues, Judge is an automatic start with a caveat: expect the Yankees to manage his workload, including days off and early exits, through the end of the regular season. In leagues that count games played or plate appearances, that is a genuine cost.
The players whose value drops are the outfielders and designated hitters who accumulated playing time in his absence. Anyone rostered purely because of Judge's injury should be evaluated on merit now, and most will not survive that evaluation.
What is next
The Yankees close the season with a stretch that will decide their wild card seeding rather than their division. The metrics to track are Judge's plate appearance totals per game and whether he is used in the field or exclusively at designated hitter. A player used in the outfield regularly is a player his team believes is fully healthy. A player limited to designated hitter duty is one being protected, and that distinction matters far more in October than it does this week.
