Formenton has filled a middle-six role with the Oilers this season. The 27-year-old has a goal, two assists, six shots on net, 13 hits, five blocked shots and a plus-4 rating over five appearances. His ice time is likely to decrease once the Oilers' forward group gets healthier, which could begin to happen if Zach Hyman (undisclosed) returns Tuesday versus the Kings.

Formenton signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Oilers on Wednesday.
Formenton had 18 goals and 32 points in 79 regular-season outings with Ottawa in 2021-22, but he hasn't played in the NHL since. The 26-year-old has instead played with Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League, most recently recording 13 goals, 23 points and 48 PIM in 42 regular-season appearances in 2025-26. He'll compete for one of Edmonton's bottom-six spots during training camp.

Ottawa won't re-sign Formenton, general manager Steve Staios told TSN 1200 Ottawa on Wednesday.
After Formenton was acquitted of all charges of sexual assault in July, the NHL announced that he's eligible to register a new contract Oct. 15, followed by a return to game action Dec. 1. The 26-year-old was a restricted free agent, but if the Senators don't plan on retaining his rights, then he can sign anywhere. However, it's not clear if he'll end up back in the NHL. He spent 2022-23 and 2023-24 with Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League, and after missing 2024-25 while on a leave of absence due to the charges, he is back with Ambri-Piotta for 2025-26. However, his new deal with the club is a four-month contract that contains an option to extend through the full campaign, which does leave the door open for him to head to North America. Formenton had 18 goals, 32 points and 59 PIM in 79 appearances with Ottawa in 2021-22.

The NHL announced Thursday that Formenton will be eligible to return to game action Dec. 1, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.
Formenton hasn't suited up for the Senators since the 2023-24 campaign, and he was granted a leave of absence by the team due to charges of sexual assault. However, he was acquitted of all charges in July and signed a four-month contract with HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League in early September. The deal includes an option to remain through the end of the season, but Formenton will be eligible to return to the NHL this winter. Per Johnston, contracts can be registered with the NHL on Oct. 15, and the players can begin conditioning with a team Nov. 15 and appear in a game Dec. 1.
