Kalkbrenner is starting Friday's game against Boston.
Kalkbrenner is getting a spot start at center for the injured Moussa Diabate (quadriceps) on Friday. He makes sense as a plug-and-play fantasy option in the short term.

Kalkbrenner provided one point (1-2 FT), one rebound, one assist, one block and one steal in 13 minutes during Wednesday's 97-89 loss to Detroit.
Kalkbrenner played a limited role off the bench, attempting no field goals while contributing modest defensive production. Moussa Diabate handled the bulk of the minutes at center, logging 35 minutes compared to Kalkbrenner's 13. The second-year big man's restricted workload makes him difficult to trust in standard fantasy formats, though his shot-blocking ability could provide some value in deeper leagues.

Kalkbrenner ended with four points (2-3 FG), five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 14 minutes during Wednesday's 110-103 victory over Brooklyn.
Kalkbrenner lost the starting center job midway through last year, and his reserve position is carrying into the new campaign. The second-year big man is likely to struggle for fantasy viability as long as Moussa Diabate is dominating the center minutes.

Kalkbrenner is in the Hornets' starting lineup for Friday's preseason game against the Grizzlies.
Kalkbrenner will draw the start for Friday's preseason finale while Moussa Diabate (elbow) is sidelined. Across three preseason games, Kalkbrenner has averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds over 15.4 minutes per game. It's unclear what his role will look like for the 2026-27 season given the presence of both Diabate and rookie first-rounder Hannes Steinbach.

Kalkbrenner finished with four points (2-2 FG) and five rebounds in 12 minutes during Sunday's 105-90 preseason win over Milwaukee.
Kalkbrenner continued what has been a modest preseason, doing very little to endear himself to fantasy managers. It appears as though Moussa Diabate will retain the starting center position heading into the regular season. This means Kalkbrenner is likely to be up against Hannes Steinbach for backup minutes, limiting his appeal across all formats. For those in deeper leagues, Kalkbrenner should be seen as a potential streaming option for blocks.

Kalkbrenner said Monday that improving his physicality was his biggest developmental focus during the offseason, Owen O'Connor of SI.com reports.
Physicality was already an area in which Kalkbrenner made noticeable strides during his rookie campaign, particularly absorbing contact defensively and setting screens. The 7-foot-1 center averaged 7.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 21.4 minutes across 69 regular-season appearances last campaign, and further improvement in that area could help him earn additional playing time in Charlotte's frontcourt. His competition is much fiercer this season due to the additions of Hannes Steinbach, Naz Reid and Royce O'Neale.
