Atlanta exercised Newell's third-year option Sunday, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.
With Atlanta exercising the option before the Nov. 2 deadline, Newell remains under team control through the 2027-28 season. The move offers roster certainty for the young forward, though it does not directly change his expected role this season or next.

Newell won't start Friday's preseason finale against the Mavericks, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.
With most of Atlanta's regulars resting, Newell drew a spot start against the Thunder on Monday. However, the Hawks are at full strength Friday, so the second-year forward will come off the bench.

Newell is starting Monday's preseason game against the Thunder, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.
The majority of the Hawks' usual starters are sitting out Monday. Newell is auditioning for a spot in the Opening Night rotation for Atlanta and has already posted a couple of solid preseason performances.

Newell finished with 12 points (5-9 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals in 22 minutes during Monday's 132-123 preseason loss to Memphis.
Newell put together an impressive showing off the bench, as he shot with efficiency and crashed the glass for a team-high 12 rebounds. The Georgia product is in the mix for an increased role heading into the 2026-27 campaign, and Monday's performance will certainly help his case.

Newell will look to build upon his rookie campaign after averaging just 11.4 minutes across 44 regular-season appearances.
The young big remains an intriguing developmental piece due to his athleticism, rebounding and ability to finish around the basket, though Atlanta's frontcourt depth could continue to limit his opportunities. Newell is unlikely to warrant much attention in standard fantasy formats unless he secures a substantially larger role in his second season.

Newell (rest) has been ruled out for Saturday's Summer League game against the Wizards, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.
Newell will end up playing in four Summer League games in Las Vegas, averaging 11.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.8 blocks over 25.9 minutes per game while going 6-for-12 from three-point range. He split his time between the Hawks and the G League during the 2025-26 season but averaged just 11.4 minutes per game across 44 regular-season contests (two starts). Newell figures to compete with Aaron Wiggins and Mouhamed Gueye (foot) for bench minutes in 2026-27.
