Edwin Diaz Is Not a Lock for the Dodgers Playoff Roster and Dave Roberts Said So Out Loud

Dave Roberts said Monday that Edwin Diaz is not guaranteed a spot on the Dodgers' postseason roster, an unusually blunt public assessment of a pitcher who was signed to close games in October. Roberts told reporters that Diaz needs to pitch better and that the club needs something it can hang its hat on before committing to him.

The comments followed a rehab outing in Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday in which Diaz recorded two outs while allowing five runs, walking three and hitting a batter. He is scheduled to pitch again for Oklahoma City on Wednesday, and by the manager's framing, that appearance carries real weight.

A season that never got started

Diaz owns an 11.85 ERA with a 2.56 WHIP across 16 appearances in 2026. The strikeout rate has held up at 12.5 per nine innings, which is the one number in his line that still looks like the pitcher the Dodgers thought they were getting. Everything else has been a problem.

The timeline explains part of it. Diaz missed roughly three months earlier in the season following arthroscopic elbow surgery, struggled immediately upon returning to the majors, and then went back on the injured list in mid-August with a neck issue. He has not had a stretch of health long enough to build any rhythm, and relievers who lose their delivery rarely find it inside of a few appearances.

What the strikeout rate does and does not tell you

A 12.5 K/9 alongside a 2.56 WHIP is a specific kind of broken. The stuff is still missing bats, which means the arm is not the issue. The walks and the traffic say the command is, and command is the thing that comes back last after an elbow procedure.

For evaluation purposes, that is actually the more encouraging version of a bad season. A reliever who has lost velocity and stopped missing bats is usually finished. A reliever who is still generating swing-and-miss but cannot locate is a mechanical problem, and mechanical problems sometimes resolve in a single bullpen session.

The trouble is that the Dodgers do not have time to wait for that. There are roughly two weeks left in the regular season, and Los Angeles has already clinched. The window for Diaz to prove anything is measured in appearances, not weeks.

Fantasy fallout

For anyone still rostering Diaz in a season-long league heading into championship weeks, this is the end of the line. He has not been a source of saves, he is not on a major league mound, and his manager has publicly put his October roster spot in question. Drop him for a reliever with a defined role on a team playing meaningful games.

The Dodgers' ninth inning has belonged to Tanner Scott, and nothing in Roberts' comments suggests that is about to change. Scott remains the saves source in this bullpen, and his usage is not going to be disrupted by a rehabbing arm the club is openly skeptical of.

The broader lesson for dynasty and keeper managers: relievers coming off elbow procedures are among the least reliable assets in fantasy baseball. The save is the most volatile category in the game precisely because the role can be removed at any moment, and health plus command is a fragile combination to bet a roster spot on.

The betting angle

Bullpen composition is one of the most underpriced inputs in October baseball, and this is a case where the market has probably already accounted for it. The Dodgers' championship price reflects a rotation and a lineup, not a specific seventh reliever.

What matters more is the shape of Los Angeles' late innings. A bullpen without Diaz is a bullpen with fewer high-leverage options, which raises the value of the starting rotation going deep and increases the variance in one-run games. Teams with thin relief corps historically underperform their run differential in short series, because a single blown lead can end a round.

The Verdexed model's postseason simulations treat bullpen depth as a multiplier on series win probability rather than as an additive factor, and the effect is largest in best-of-three and best-of-five formats where a single reliever can appear in a decisive spot. If Diaz is left off, Los Angeles is not significantly worse on paper, but the distribution of outcomes widens.

The Verdexed model take

Roberts' public comments are the tell. Managers do not float roster doubts about an established closer unless the internal evaluation is already leaning negative, and the Wednesday outing reads more like a formality than a genuine audition.

The projection: Diaz makes the roster only if Wednesday goes cleanly, and even then he is a middle-innings option rather than a leverage arm. The Dodgers will structure their October bullpen around the pitchers who have been available and effective all season, and Diaz has been neither.

What to do

Drop Diaz in all redraft formats. Hold Tanner Scott as the Dodgers save source. In dynasty leagues, Diaz is a buy-low only if you believe the elbow is genuinely behind him and the command returns over a full offseason, and that is a bet with a wide range of outcomes.

For bettors, do not read this as a reason to fade Los Angeles. Read it as a reason to look closely at Dodgers game totals and run lines in short series, where a thinner bullpen shows up first.
