Blake Snell Is Close and Tyler Glasnow Is Not: The Dodgers Rotation Math Heading Into the Deadline
By Verdexed MLB Desk
The Los Angeles Dodgers are simultaneously the industry's presumed favorite to acquire Tarik Skubal and a team trying to get three of its own starting pitchers back on the mound. Those two facts are related, and the sequencing of the rehabs is the reason Los Angeles is treating the trade deadline with more urgency than a roster of its quality would normally require.
Blake Snell, on the injured list since May with loose bodies in his left elbow, is the furthest along. He has been building up in Triple-A Oklahoma City, with his most recent scheduled rehab outing covering roughly four innings and about 60 pitches. The working expectation is a return to the major league rotation around the middle of August, and the Dodgers have reportedly considered accelerating that timeline given the schedule.
Tyler Glasnow is meaningfully behind. He has been out since early May with lower back spasms and recently faced live hitters at Dodger Stadium, throwing roughly 25 pitches with his fastball reportedly sitting in the mid-to-upper 90s. He is expected to need at least one more live session before a rehab assignment begins, which puts a realistic return in the second half of August at the earliest and assumes no further setbacks.
Shohei Ohtani is the least predictable of the three. He is dealing with left knee inflammation, will not make his next scheduled start, and the organization has been explicit that his return to the mound is uncertain because it wants the knee fully healed before he pitches again.
Why this drives the deadline
A rotation with Snell in mid-August, Glasnow in late August, and Ohtani on an open-ended timeline is a rotation that cannot be counted on in October. That is the case for Los Angeles pushing hard on Skubal, who would give the team a front-line starter whose availability does not depend on a rehab chart.
Reporting has consistently identified the Dodgers as the favorite in a Skubal market that also includes Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Atlanta and the Yankees. The industry expectation is that Detroit trades him before Monday's deadline. Nothing about that is official, and Detroit has a legitimate case for keeping him.
Fantasy fallout
Snell is the clearest actionable name. Managers in leagues with injured list slots should already be holding him. Managers in leagues without them should be monitoring his rehab starts and adding him roughly a week before the projected return, because he will be a top-30 starter the moment he is active and the waiver claim gets expensive once the return date is announced.
Glasnow is a hold in leagues with injured list flexibility and a drop in shallow formats. A pitcher who needs at least one more live session before starting a rehab assignment is at minimum three weeks from a major league start, and back issues in pitchers have a poor track record of resolving cleanly on the first attempt.
Ohtani's pitching value should be written off for fantasy purposes until there is a concrete timeline. His bat is unaffected, which is the only thing that matters for the overwhelming majority of managers rostering him.
The Verdexed model take
Verdexed's model applies a return-probability curve to rehabbing pitchers rather than a binary healthy or injured flag. A starter who has completed multiple rehab outings at a meaningful pitch count, as Snell has, carries a high probability of returning within the stated window. A pitcher who has only faced live hitters once, as Glasnow has, carries a much wider distribution with a substantial tail of additional setbacks.
The consequence for Los Angeles is that the model's rest-of-season rotation projection improves sharply in mid-August and then only modestly after that. That shape is exactly why acquiring an established starter is worth a premium price to this front office: it converts a probabilistic rotation into a certain one.
On the betting side, the Dodgers' World Series and pennant prices are unlikely to move much on rehab news, because those markets already assume the team gets healthy. The more exploitable numbers are the daily game lines and team totals in the first half of August, where Los Angeles will still be running a patchwork rotation while the market prices the brand.
What to do in your league
Add Snell now if he is available. Hold Glasnow only if it costs you nothing. Do not chase Ohtani's pitching line.
If the Dodgers acquire Skubal, the fantasy implication is straightforward: his projection improves modestly on run support and defense, and every Dodgers starter behind him gets pushed down the rotation, which slightly reduces start counts for the back end of the staff over the final two months.
What's next
The deadline passes Monday evening. Snell's next rehab outing is the most important date on the Dodgers' calendar that does not involve a trade, because a clean four-inning start at 60 pitches puts him one or two outings from activation.
Watch for Glasnow's second live session to be scheduled. Until that happens, treat every optimistic August projection for him as speculation.
What a Skubal acquisition would actually change
If Los Angeles lands Skubal, the immediate fantasy effect is smaller than most managers expect and the betting effect is larger.
On the fantasy side, Skubal's own projection improves only modestly. He moves to a better run-support environment and a better defense, which helps his win total and shaves his ERA slightly, but an elite starter is already priced as an elite starter. Nobody is buying or selling him based on a change of uniform.
The larger fantasy consequence is downstream. Adding a front-line starter to a rotation that is about to get Snell and Glasnow back creates a genuine innings crunch. Somebody loses starts. In September, contending teams also start managing workloads for October, which means the back end of the Dodgers rotation becomes unreliable for fantasy purposes at exactly the moment fantasy playoffs begin.
On the betting side, the effect is concentrated in October markets rather than August ones. A rotation anchored by a healthy front-line starter is worth substantially more in a five-game series than it is across a two-month regular season stretch, which is why the Dodgers' World Series price is the number most sensitive to whether this trade happens.
What it means
The disciplined position is to add Snell now, ignore Glasnow until a rehab assignment is actually scheduled, and treat Ohtani strictly as a hitter. Everything else about the Dodgers' pitching staff between now and October is contingent on a trade that has not happened.
