Latest news

  • Werenski scored a goal on five shots in Thursday's 2-1 shootout win over the Stars.

Werenski tied the game with 3:14 remaining in regulation, ending his season-long goal drought when the Blue Jackets needed him the most. The defenseman has seven points (one goal, six assists) during an active five-game point streak. His sustained offensive involvement and heavy workload continue to make him an elite fantasy option despite his relatively slow start in the goal-scoring department.

  • Werenski pocketed two assists, one on the power play, in Tuesday's 7-2 win over Colorado.

Both helpers came in the second period, including one on the Cole Sillinger tally that chased Scott Wedgewood from the Avalanche crease. Werenski is still looking for his first goal of 2026-27, but the production will likely come in bunches once he gets going. The 2025-26 Norris Trophy winner lit the lamp 45 times over the last two regular seasons. In 13 contests this season, he has produced 12 assists, 36 shots on net, 30 blocked shots and a plus-7 rating. Werenski is also currently riding a four-game point streak.

  • Werenski notched two assists and two blocked shots in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over the Flyers.

Werenski earned multiple points in a game for the first time since his two-assist effort against the Sabres on Opening Night. The defenseman hasn't had a lot of chances to shine yet given the Blue Jackets' light schedule in October. He's still doing well with eight assists, 29 shots on net, 24 blocked shots and a plus-7 rating over 10 contests while averaging 28:55 of ice time. He's scored 20-plus goals in consecutive years and has point-per-game potential.

  • Werenski picked up two assists, one on the power play, while adding three shots on net, one blocked shot and a plus-2 rating in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Sabres.

The reigning Norris Trophy winner began the new season in style, having a hand in first-period tallies by Matthew Knies and Adam Fantilli as the Blue Jackets grabbed an early 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Werenski is coming off back-to-back 20-goal, 80-point campaigns that also featured more than 20 power-play points, and as long as he stays healthy there's no reason to expect any regression from the veteran backbone of a roster looking to take a step forward in 2026-27.

  • Werenski said Thursday that he remains committed to the Blue Jackets, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Werenski's offseason has been marred by some uncertainty regarding his future, as reports surfaced in July that he had indicated that he was unlikely to sign an extension when his current contract expires after the 2027-28 campaign. The 29-year-old was then involved in trade talks and ultimately rejected a trade to Dallas in early July. Werenski said Thursday that there was some miscommunication between him and general manager Don Waddell, but the two sides have since spoken and now seem to be on the same page. Werenski has maintained that his top priority is winning, so his long-term future with the team could depend on how the Blue Jackets fare during the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, but he should continue to play a prominent role for Columbus this year.

  • Werenski scored a power-play goal, distributed an assist, fired six shots on net and recorded four blocked shots in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Red Wings.

Werenski played the hero in Tuesday's contest during multiple instances. He scored a power-play goal midway through the second period before providing the game-tying assist on Adam Fantilli's goal with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation. Werenski also put away the game-winning tally in the shootout on Columbus' fifth attempt. Overall, the 28-year-old blueliner is up to 22 goals, 58 assists, 240 shots on net, 30 hits and 90 blocked shots across 71 games this season. Tuesday's contest helped him secure 80-plus points in each of the past two seasons. He'll likely be a candidate for this year's Norris Trophy and holds strong fantasy value for the remainder of the regular season.
