Metsa signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Sabres on Friday.
Metsa is set to play out the second season of his two-year, $1.63 million contract in 2026-27, but before he signed this extension, he was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The 27-year-old had two goals, six points, a plus-16 rating, eight PIM, five hits and 31 blocks in 43 regular-season outings in 2025-26. Metsa is likely to make Buffalo's Opening Night roster, but he might not be in the lineup regularly.

Metsa scored a goal in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Canadiens in Game 6.
Metsa made his playoff debut Saturday, replacing Luke Schenn in the lineup. Metsa had six points, 24 shots on net, 31 blocked shots and a plus-16 rating over 43 regular-season appearances in his first taste of NHL action this year. It's a statement that the 27-year-old was trusted over both of the Sabres' big defensive trade acquisitions in an elimination game, and it suggests he'll remain in the lineup for Monday's Game 7.

Metsa was recalled from AHL Rochester on Monday.
Metsa will return to the Sabres just four days after being loaned back to the AHL. During that time, he played a trio of games with Rochester and will return to Buffalo in time for Tuesday's home clash with the Islanders. Across 38 games with the Sabres this season, the 27-year-old bluliner has six points, 22 shots on net and 28 blocked shots. Metsa will likely serve as a depth defenseman during the Sabres' push toward securing their first playoff appearance since the 2010-11 season.

Metsa was reassigned to AHL Rochester on Thursday.
With Conor Timmins back from injury, Metsa was going to face an uphill battle for ice time on the crowded Sabres' blue line. Instead, he'll head back to the minors, where he should be able to log big minutes, including some power-play opportunities. In his 38 games with the Sabres this season, the Wisconsin native has notched two goals, four assists and 22 shots while averaging a mere 10:19 of ice time.
