Desharnais, who underwent appendectomy surgery, was placed on injured reserve Thursday, per Sammi Silber of The District Standard.
Desharnais' timetable was previously established to be 4-6 weeks, so putting him on IR makes perfect sense. Washington now has a free roster spot to summon a player from the minors. Desharnais has three assists, 11 PIM, 22 hits and 14 blocks in nine appearances in 2026-27. Dylan McIlrath has been a healthy scratch in each of Washington's past four games, but he might play regularly during Desharnais' absence.

Desharnais underwent a successful appendectomy surgery Thursday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Desharnais had appeared in each of the Capitals' first nine games of the regular season, and he recorded no goals, three assists, 22 hits, 14 blocked shots and 11 PIM while averaging 19:25 of ice time. However, he's now slated to be sidelined until at least mid-to-late November while recovering from his appendectomy. Dylan McIlrath is a candidate to see increased playing time over the next several weeks, while it wouldn't be surprising to see the Capitals place Desharnais on injured reserve in order to call up an additional defenseman.

Desharnais notched two assists in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Devils.
The journeyman blueliner recorded his first multi-point performance since March 30, 2024, when he was a member of the Oilers. Both of Desharnais' helpers in Saturday's win came in the second period as the Capitals pulled away. He had a hand in the tallies by Ilya Protas and Boone Jenner. Desharnais has never produced more than 11 points in a season, but he's got three assists in his first eight games for Washington while adding 20 hits, 14 blocked shots, seven PIM and an impressive plus-10 rating.

Desharnais signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday.
Desharnais had a goal, seven points, 68 PIM, 103 hits and 83 blocks in 53 outings with San Jose in 2025-26. The 30-year-old blueliner is likely to serve primarily on the third pairing over the life of this deal.

Desharnais missed one game due to an upper-body injury. The 29-year-old defenseman is back in the lineup in a bottom-four role now, giving him minimal appeal in fantasy. He's earned just six points with 25 shots on net, 77 hits, 68 blocked shots and 60 PIM over 41 outings this season, though that doubles his point total from 51 contests a year ago.

Desharnais was sidelined against the Flyers on Saturday due to his upper-body injury. With his expected return to the lineup Tuesday, Nick Leddy will most likely serve as a healthy scratch in Nashville. Desharnais is projected to skate on the third pairing alongside Sam Dickinson against the Predators.
