Latest news

  • Hedman scored a power-play goal Thursday in a 4-1 win over the Blackhawks.

It's important to note that he was out there on the power play and made no bones about what he believes he can do there after the game. "I want to be back on (the power play), I think I can still bring a lot to the table when it comes to special teams," Hedman said. "PK and PP, so it was good to be out there." Hedman's ice time was low early in the season, and his job on the power play was given to John Carlson and Charle-Edouard D'Astous, but the big man has come to take that back. The PP shuffle is on in Tampa Bay, and that means someone is going to lose value. Hedman was a beast Thursday, joining the rush, charging down the center and ripping a shot five-hole from the hash marks.

  • Hedman scored a goal Saturday in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Predators.

Hedman has three goals, two assists, 16 blocks and 15 shots this season while averaging 14:13 of ice time. His game has eased toward its twilight, but that's not really a surprise for a 6-foot-7 defender with 1,176 regular-season and another 170 playoff games on his odometer.

  • Hedman (lower body) will play in Thursday's game against the Jets, Benjamin Pierce of the Lightning's official site reports.

Hedman sustained a lower-body injury during Friday's game against the Avalanche, and he was unavailable against Utah on Saturday. However, he'll return to game action after having several days to recover. Across the six appearances prior to his one-game absence, Hedman had logged two goals, two assists, four blocked shots, two PIM and a hit while averaging 12:44 of ice time. He had started the year in a four-game slump.

  • Hedman (lower body) won't play Saturday versus the Mammoth.

Hedman is considered day-to-day at this time. The Lightning are poised to go with six defensemen in the lineup, also scratching Max Crozier. Look for increased duties for Charle-Edouard D'Astous in Saturday's contest.

  • Hedman (undisclosed) left Friday's game versus the Avalanche early, and there was no update on his status after the game, Lightning reporter Gabby Shirley reports.

The Lightning didn't acknowledge Hedman's early exit with an in-game update. The defenseman has been playing a smaller role this year, often on the third pairing. The team has also dressed seven defensemen frequently to further lighten his load, so it won't be difficult to replace him in the lineup if he's unavailable versus the Mammoth on Saturday.

  • Hedman scored a goal on two shots, blocked two shots and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Golden Knights.

Hedman's goal late in the second period was his second in the last three games. Over nine outings this season, he has added two assists, 13 shots on net, 13 blocked shots and a plus-6 rating. Hedman is playing a smaller role in his age-35 season, working on the third pairing without much power-play time. As such, his time as one of the league's top offensive defensemen has likely come to a close, though he should still be able to put up around 30 points if he stays healthy.
