Mitchell was recalled from AHL San Diego on Friday.
Mitchell appeared in each of the Ducks' first five games of the regular season, and he was held scoreless with nine PIM, seven blocked shots and six hits while averaging 16:36 of ice time. He was sent down in mid-October but will rejoin the NHL club after Pavel Mintyukov (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Friday.

Mitchell being sent down is a good indication that Drew Helleson (lower body) will make his season debut Tuesday against the Flames. The 26-year-old Mitchell has not recorded a point with the Ducks this season while accounting for six hits, seven blocks, nine PIM and a minus-3 rating over five appearances.

Although Mitchell successfully cleared waivers, it seems he won't be in the minors when Anaheim opens the 2026-27 campaign in Vegas on Friday. The 26-year-old had a goal, 17 points and 87 PIM in 58 regular-season outings with AHL Bridgeport in 2025-26. He also recorded a goal and six PIM in nine NHL regular-season appearances with the Islanders last year. Mitchell might be part of the third pairing versus Vegas.

Mitchell was a surprise addition on Sunday's waiver list, as the Ducks currently have multiple key defensemen listed as either day-to-day or out, including Pavel Mintyukov (illness), Drew Helleson (lower body) and Ian Moore (lower body). The 26-year-old Mitchell played nine regular-season outings with the Islanders in 2025-26, but he primarily played with AHL Bridgeport, posting one goal and 17 points across 58 regular-season AHL games. While he'll head to AHL San Diego if he goes unclaimed, he could return to Anaheim in the near future if the Ducks remain banged up on the blue line.
