The Blue Jackets shuffled up their depth forwards this week, with Danton Heinen getting waived and Lorentz and Jack Williams getting promoted. Lorentz has produced nine points over nine games to begin the season with Cleveland.

Lorentz scored three goals in AHL Cleveland's 5-4 overtime win over Lehigh Valley on Saturday.
Lorentz was dealt to the Blue Jackets' organization in the Matthew Knies/Kirill Marchenko trade in September. With Cleveland, Lorentz has earned four points and eight shots on net over three games. The 30-year-old forward had been an NHL regular over the previous six seasons, and he could eventually find his way to Columbus as a bottom-six forward later in 2026-27.

Lorentz, alongside Emil Andrae, Matthew Knies and a second-round pick, was traded to the Blue Jackets from the Maple Leafs in exchange for Kirill Marchenko, Elvis Merzlikins and Miles Wood, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
After the Maple Leafs placed Lorentz on waivers Thursday, the veteran center will be given a change of scenery in the Blue Jackets' organization. The 30-year-old forward played his role well in the 2025-26 campaign, where he compiled seven goals, 18 points, 70 shots on net, 154 hits and 48 blocked shots across 71 regular-season appearances. While Lorentz is expected to open the upcoming campaign with AHL Cleveland, he could slot into the fourth-line center role for Columbus at some point this season due to his proven grit compared to Luca Del Bel Belluz, who is more of a skill-based center. If the Jackets deem that Del Bel Belluz needs another year to develop in the minors, Lorentz would likely be the one who claims the last center spot, giving him a major boost to his fantasy outlook for the 2026-27 campaign.

After playing a sizable role for the Maple Leafs in the 2025-26 campaign, Lorentz is currently on his way to the AHL via the waiver wire. The 30-year-old center appeared in 71 regular-season games during the 2025-26 campaign, where he posted seven goals, 18 points, 70 shots on net, 154 hits and 48 blocked shots. While the Leafs would ideally like to retain his rights in the AHL, he has proven to be somewhat effective in a bottom-six role at the NHL level, so there's a chance he could be scooped up over the next 24 hours. If he clears waivers, he'll likely open the 2026-27 campaign with AHL Toronto.
