Hughes scored a goal on two shots and went plus-3 in Friday's 5-2 win over the Golden Knights.
Hughes opened the scoring at 5:38 of the first period. The defenseman is starting to pick up the pace with three points across his last three outings, which follows a four-game skid. For the season, Hughes is at five goals, two assists, 36 shots on net, seven blocked shots, eight PIM and a plus-7 rating across 14 appearances. That would put him on pace to get back above the 40-point mark he missed out on in 2025-26.

Hughes finally snapped his four-game point drought by assisting on Nico Hischier's second goal before scoring late in the middle frame, restoring New Jersey's three-goal advantage just 28 seconds after Dallas got on the board. It was his first career multigoal game in the NHL; the first one stood as the game winner. Hughes has three goals, one assist and 22 shots in seven games so far this season. He's averaging 24:06, which is a full minute more than last season (23:01). Hughes hasn't been a prolific goal scorer in his career, so these kinds of nights are few and far between. But he's entering the season with good health and hope for his first 50-point season.

Hughes danced into the slot and ripped a rocket from between the dots that froze Joseph Woll. The 23-year-old defender has delivered at least a 41-point pace in each of his three full seasons, but he hasn't climbed back to the height of his 47-point rookie campaign. That earned Hughes a top-three finish in Calder trophy voting in 2022-23. With better health, he could top 50 points for the first time in his career. Hughes missed 14 games last season and 11 the year before.

Prior to getting hurt, the blueliner was struggling offensively, going 13 games without finding the back of the net while managing just four helpers. While he's unlikely to be a Norris Trophy contender, Hughes should be able to get back over the 40-point threshold with a full 84-game schedule.
