Kirkland has started the season well, with five goals and four assists in 11 outings. The 30-year-old winger will likely spend most of the campaign in the AHL, where he'll serve as a veteran leader for Iowa.

Kirkland will make way for defenseman Carson Lambos, as the Wild are dealing with some injuries on the blue line. The 30-year-old Kirkland served as a healthy scratch during his brief stint in the NHL and is unlikely to be anything more than an emergency depth option for the organization moving forward.

Kirkland was recalled from AHL Iowa on Tuesday.
Kirkland's call up from Iowa was done in a corresponding move to Nico Sturm (upper body) being placed on injured reserve. The 30-year-old Kirkland was off to a solid start in the AHL prior to his call up, posting two assists and six shots on net across four appearances. He'll likely suit up as Minnesota's fourth-line left winger in Tuesday's clash against the Jets.

Kirkland was placed on waivers by the Wild on Thursday for the purpose of reassignment to AHL Iowa.
Kirkland is coming off back-to-back years in which he made at least 20 regular-season appearances with Calgary, and he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Wild during the offseason. He'll likely spend most of the year in the minors once again, but his NHL experience makes him a candidate to be called up if the Wild need additional depth at some point.
