Latest news

  • The Hurricanes placed Staal (calf) on injured reserve Thursday.

The Hurricanes announced Tuesday that Staal would miss approximately 1-2 months due to a torn calf muscle, so it isn't very surprising to see him land on injured reserve. Across his first six regular-season appearances, Staal was held scoreless with 19 hits and three blocked shots while averaging 15:34 of ice time. Felix Unger Sorum was recalled by Carolina on Thursday to provide additional depth in Staal's absence.

  • Staal will be out for 1-2 months after sustaining a torn calf muscle, Ryan Henkel of The Hockey News reports Tuesday.

Staal went pointless through the first six games of the season before missing Sunday's matchup with the Flyers. Even with his offense drying up, the 38-year-old center remains a key piece of the Canes' roster and figures to retake his third-line role once he is cleared to play. In the meantime, Mark Jankowski should be expected to take on a bigger role, including with the No. 2 power-play unit.

  • Staal (lower body) will not play in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Staal will miss his first game of the season after managing 14:12 of ice time Saturday in Chicago. The veteran center has been held off the scoresheet through six games this season while doling out 19 hits. Mark Jankowski will presumably slot into the third-line center role Sunday, while Nicolas Deslauriers is set to draw into the lineup after serving as a healthy scratch in the previous four games. Carolina's next game is at home against Washington on Tuesday.

  • Staal signed a one-year, $4.9 million contract extension with the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Staal's current contract covers 2026-27, but the extension will keep him in Raleigh an additional year. The 38-year-old center can earn up to $5.1 million in performance bonuses in 2027-28. Staal figures to remain a key part of the Hurricanes' defensive structure from the third line heading into the upcoming season as the team looks to defend its Stanley Cup title from June.

  • Staal was named the Conn Smythe winner after Sunday's 3-0 win over the Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Staal was tied for 22nd in points (12) during the playoffs, but he tied for fifth in goals (eight) thanks to an impressive five-game goal streak to start the Cup Finals. He didn't score in the clincher, but Staal did enough earlier in the series to sway the voters away from Vegas' playoff points leader Mitch Marner or any of the Hurricanes' other top forwards. At 37 years and 277 days old, Staal is the oldest Conn Smythe winner in NHL history. He is under contract with the Hurricanes for one more season.

  • Staal scored a goal on three shots and added five hits in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Staal scored for the fifth game in a row, a span in which he has six goals and an assist. He's the fourth player in Stanley Cup Finals history to open the series with a five-game goal streak, and the first to do that since Jean Beliveau in 1956. The legendary run has Staal up to eight goals, four assists, 35 shots on net, 84 hits and a plus-6 rating over 18 playoff outings. While playoff points leader Mitch Marner could still prevail, Staal is making a late case to get his name on the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Hurricanes can win one more game.
