Chernyshov (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
The Sharks announced over the weekend that Chernyshov is considered week-to-week, so it isn't very surprising to see him land on injured reserve. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to return, but Collin Graf remains a candidate to see an increased role for San Jose in Chernyshov's absence.

Chernyshov suffered an injury in Thursday's 6-2 win over Ottawa, and he is facing an extended absence. He has earned two goals, four points, 12 shots on net, seven blocked shots and six hits in 11 appearances this season. With Chernyshov unavailable, Collin Graf is projected to skate on the top line against Boston on Saturday.

Chernyshov has opened the year in a third-line role, but that didn't slow him down Saturday. He cashed in the Sharks' fourth goal, and he also scored their fifth on a feed from Macklin Celebrini. Chernyshov would fit in just fine on the top line, but head coach Ryan Warsofsky looks to be spreading the youth throughout the lineup for now. Chernyshov is worth keeping an eye on -- Saturday's performance won't be a one-off.

Chernyshov looked NHL ready in a 28-game sample over two stints as a rookie last year. He produced 19 points, 46 shots on net and a plus-2 rating while averaging 15:03 of ice time per game. The 20-year-old winger will still need to earn a top-six job and power-play time, but he could be a good depth pick or waiver-wire addition in fantasy if he can produce at a similar pace over a full campaign.
