James logged an assist, three hits and two PIM in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Kraken.
James missed a couple of weeks to begin the season while recovering from a broken hand. He got a little time at AHL Syracuse over the weekend to get up to game speed, but he should be a bottom-six regular for the Lightning moving forward. As a rookie last year, he put up 15 points over 43 regular-season outings, giving him 30-point potential if he can avoid further injuries and show a little development in his second NHL campaign.

James was called up from AHL Syracuse on Wednesday.
James has no points and two PIM in two outings with Syracuse in 2026-27. The 24-year-old logged 43 regular-season outings with Tampa Bay in 2025-26, recording seven goals, 15 points, eight PIM and 58 hits. If James draws into the lineup Thursday versus Seattle, he could occupy a bottom-six role. However, Tampa Bay has 13 healthy forwards, including James, and often dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen.

With his demotion, James will have been medically cleared for his hand injury. While the team likely wants the 24-year-old forward to start with the Crunch in order to get up to game speed, he should be in the mix for a call-up sooner rather than later, especially if an injury or two pops up.

James (hand) will not be in the lineup versus the Wild on Thursday, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
There had been some speculation that James might be ready to make his season debut versus the Wild, but it seems he will have to wait at least one more game. For now, the Lightning will continue utilizing seven defensemen while the 24-year-old winger is on the shelf, though they could change their deployment when he returns.

The Lightning placed James (hand) on non-roster injured reserve Monday.
James entered training camp with a broken hand and was expected to miss the first two weeks of the regular season, so his move to non-roster injured reserve isn't surprising. Conor Geekie and Scott Sabourin are candidates to see increased time in the lineup early in the year while James is sidelined.
