Gustafsson was placed on waivers by the Penguins on Saturday.
The Penguins designated Gustafsson on the non-roster list ahead of his move to waivers. The 26-year-old center hasn't played in the NHL since the 2024-25 campaign, but he signed a one-year, $850,000 contract over the summer. Across 48 regular-season games with AHL Manitoba in 2025-26, he posted 10 goals and 32 points. If he clears waivers over the next 24 hours, he will likely report to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Gustafsson signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Penguins on Sunday.
Gustafsson was dealt to Pittsburgh from Winnipeg on Monday in exchange for Jack St. Ivany. The 26-year-old Gustafsson didn't appear in a game with the Jets in 2025-26, so he will probably begin the 2026-27 campaign with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He has 149 regular-season games of NHL experience, though, so he should be a call-up candidate if he winds up starting the year in the minors.

Gustafsson scored two goals in AHL Manitoba's 5-2 loss to Laval on Sunday.
Gustafsson began the NHL season on the Jets' roster but was waived Thursday to make room for Jonathan Toews' return from an undisclosed injury. This was Gustafsson's first stint in the AHL since 2023-24, as he was able to spend all of 2024-25 in a part-time NHL role that saw him produce six points over 36 regular-season appearances. He'll be near the top of the list of call-ups should the Jets need reinforcements this season.
