Latest news

  • Mermis was recalled from AHL Toronto on Friday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Mermis was left off the Maple Leafs' Opening Night roster for the 2026-27 campaign, and he's recorded no goals, an assist and two PIM across his first seven regular-season appearances with the Marlies this year. He'll provide additional depth on the Maple Leafs' blue line since Marshall Rifai (lower body) and Nick Blankenburg (undisclosed) were placed on injured reserve Friday.

  • Mermis was put on waivers by Toronto on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

Mermis is projected to report to AHL Toronto if he goes unclaimed. Although the 32-year-old did record a goal and 11 PIM in 11 regular-season outings with the Maple Leafs in 2025-26, he's more of an emergency depth option, so his inclusion on the waiver list isn't surprising.

  • Mermis (lower body) was placed on waivers Tuesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Mermis had one goal, five shots on net, nine blocked shots and eight hits in 11 NHL outings this campaign before landing on injured reserve. Assuming he clears, he will probably report to AHL Toronto. Mermis hasn't earned a point in three minor-league appearances this season.

  • Mermis (lower body) was assigned to AHL Toronto on Monday for a conditioning assignment.

Mermis has missed the last 15 games due to injury. He has collected one goal, five shots on net, nine blocked shots and eight hits in 11 NHL outings this season. Mermis hasn't earned a point in two AHL appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

  • Mermis (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, retroactive to Dec. 8.

The 31-year-old defender will miss about a month after exiting Monday's game against the Lightning in the third period, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports. The Maple Leafs recalled Henry Thrun from AHL Toronto in a corresponding move. Thrun will probably enter the lineup for Thursday's game against San Jose, but Philippe Myers could also see some additional playing time in Mermis' absence.

  • Mermis (lower body) was unable to finish Monday's 2-0 win over the Lightning, and head coach Craig Berube said that the defenseman will be evaluated Tuesday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.

Mermis was forced out of the contest during the final frame after taking a knee-on-knee hit from Gage Goncalves, who received a major penalty and a game misconduct as a result of the play. Mermis recorded one shot on goal and one block in 10:34 of ice time prior to departing. The 31-year-old can be considered day-to-day until his status is updated ahead of Thursday's home matchup against San Jose.
