McWard was recalled from AHL Toronto on Friday, David Alter of The Hockey News reports.
McWard was sent to the minors ahead of the regular season, but he'll provide additional depth for the Maple Leafs after Marshall Rifai (lower body) and Nick Blankenburg (undisclosed) were placed on injured reserve. Across five minor-league appearances to begin the regular season, McWard has logged no goals, three assists and two PIM.

McWard signed a two-year, $1.75 million contract with the Maple Leafs over the summer. He'll still earn his full salary even if he plays in the minors, as it's a one-way agreement. The 25-year-old had six goals, 27 points and 24 PIM in 63 regular-season appearances with AHL Bridgeport in 2025-26.

The Islanders were down to six healthy defensemen, hence the recall of McWard. McWard led all Bridgeport defensemen with five goals and 16 points in 29 AHL games before his recall. He will line up on the third pairing, alongside Scott Mayfield, on Saturday against Toronto.
