  • Smith underwent successful surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery in 3-4 months.

    Smith suffered his injury during the Blue Jackets' Dec. 29 win over Ottawa, and he was placed on injured reserve Friday. His return timetable signals that he'll likely be sidelined until at least early April, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Blue Jackets shut him down for the remainder of the year, especially since the team is currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

    Smith was injured Monday in Ottawa. The defenseman has two assists in 15 games this season. Zach Werenski (lower body) is slated to be taken off injured reserve ahead of Saturday's game against Buffalo and will re-enter the lineup.

  • Smith logged an assist and two shots on goal in Friday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Penguins.

    This was Smith's second game of the season at the NHL level. He signed with the Blue Jackets on Monday after turning a professional tryout offer during training camp into an AHL-only deal initially. The defenseman will compete with Jake Christiansen for the last spot on the blue line for the foreseeable future. Smith has a helper, four shots on net, two hits, a blocked shot and a plus-1 rating so far.

Instead, the blueliner linked up with AHL Cleveland and has evidently shown the organization enough to warrant a one-year contract. The veteran will link up with the team for Tuesday's practice session, but he is far from a lock to be in the lineup versus Toronto on Wednesday.
