The Islanders are without two of their regulars on defense due to injuries, so the team decided to bring in some veteran experience in Hutton to potentially shore up its depth on the blue line. The 33-year-old has 575 career regular-season games of NHL experience between five teams. Hutton most recently played with the Golden Knights, notching six goals, 15 points and a plus-2 rating across 55 regular-season games in 2025-26.

Hutton compiled six goals, 15 points, 71 shots on net, 55 blocked shots, 28 hits and 19 PIM in 55 appearances for Vegas during the 2025-26 regular season. The window is tighter now, but Hutton still has time to find another team before the 2026-27 campaign begins.

Hutton notched an assist and two PIM in a 4-2 win over the Avalanche in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Wednesday.
Hutton assisted on forward Brett Howden's game-winning goal in the third period, which occurred just after Hutton got out of the penalty box. The 33-year-old defenseman's assist was his first point in seven games this postseason. Hutton has added eight shots on net, seven blocked shots and a plus-1 rating. He seems likely to stay in the lineup as long as Jeremy Lauzon (upper body) is out.
