Romanov (knee) was placed on injured reserve Monday.
Romanov's placement on injured reserve shouldn't come as a surprise, considering the defenseman is not expected back until mid-April at the earliest. With Matias Maccelli (lower body) and Calum Ritchie (lower body) both dealing with injuries, the Isles used the open roster spot from Romanov's IR placement to bring up Mitchell Chaffee.

Romanov will miss 6-8 months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, the team announced Wednesday.
Romanov will likely miss the rest of the 2026-27 regular season, but even in a best-case scenario, a potential return could come in the Islanders' final few games. He has no points, a plus-2 rating, three shots, five hits and seven blocks in three outings this year. Romanov's long-term absence will create an opportunity for Scott Mayfield or Matt Kessel to play more.

Romanov left the contest during the third period and was unable to return. Head coach Pete DeBoer indicated the Islanders will know more Wednesday. If Romanov isn't able to play Thursday versus Chicago, Matt Kessel or Scott Mayfield will check into the lineup.

Romanov has recovered from shoulder surgery and will be ready for training camp in September, according to Jon Lane of NHL.com.
Romanov played in just 15 games in his fourth year with the Islanders in 2025-26, missing a large portion of the season after being hit from behind by Mikko Rantanen during a game in Dallas in November. The 26-year-old Romanov practiced with contact toward the end of last season, so he should have no restrictions for the start of the 2026-27 campaign. The 2018 second-round pick will slot in on one of the bottom two pairings, rounding out the left side of the Islanders' blue line with Adam Pelech, behind unquestioned No. 1 defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Romanov will likely also receive work with the penalty kill this coming season.
