Lyon (upper body) was spotted practicing at Tuesday's optional morning skate, per Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic.
According to head coach Lindy Ruff, Lyon is still without a timeline for his return from the injury he suffered late in the preseason. However, his presence at Tuesday's optional morning skate is a sign that he could be close. The 33-year-old netminder had a strong 2025-26 regular season, posting a 20-10-4 record, 2.77 GAA and .906 save percentage across 36 appearances. In his absence, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen should continue to serve as the lead option between the pipes, with Colten Ellis backing him up.

Mattias Samuelsson was activated off injured reserve in a corresponding move. Lyon sustained the injury during last Thursday's preseason game. His placement on IR is retroactive, so Buffalo has the option of activating him at any time. Head coach Lindy Ruff stated Tuesday that Lyon is expected to miss at least a couple of days. Meanwhile, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is expected to start in Columbus on Thursday, and Colten Ellis is set to serve as the understudy.

He's currently in jeopardy of missing the team's Opening Night contest, where the Sabres appear to be planning for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to start.
