Alvarez went yard in the eighth inning to provide the Astros' last runs of the game. He had opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. The 29-year-old slugger has had a superb year, though he has taken a small step back with a .985 OPS since the All-Star break. Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 6-2 win over the Royals.
Alvarez extended Houston's lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning with a 375-foot shot off Seth Lugo, his career-high 40th this season. Over his last six games, Alvarez has gone 6-for-19 (.316) with a pair of homers and a 1.172 OPS. Alvarez went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and two walks during Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Royals.
Coming into this game with just three homers over his last 30 games, Alvarez clubbed his team-high 39th homer of the campaign Tuesday. Despite his recent struggles to produce the long ball, the 29-year-old has reached base safely in 11 of his last 12 games. This year, Alvarez is batting .310/.429/.594 with 39 homers and 98 RBI over 643 plate appearances.

Alvarez (ankle) is batting second as the designated hitter Sunday against the Rays, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
The 29-year-old slugger is rejoining the lineup for Sunday's series finale after sitting the past two contests due to a right ankle injury. Alvarez will look to shake off a slow start to September that has seen him post a .212/.350/.364 slash line with one homer through his first nine games of the month.
