  • Gray declined his side of a $30 million mutual option for 2027 on Friday and is now a free agent, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Gray will be paid a $10 million buyout instead. He'll have an exclusive negotiating window with the Red Sox for five days, but it's unlikely the two sides will reach an agreement before Gray is able to field offers from other clubs, as well. The 37-year-old went 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB over 169 regular-season innings in 2026.

  • Gray said recently that he plans to continue his playing career in 2027, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

An impending free agent, Gray hinted often throughout the regular season that he wasn't sure whether he'd keep pitching beyond the 2026 campaign. However, after consulting with his family, the veteran right-hander determined it was an "easy decision" to continue his career. Gray -- who turns 37 in November -- certainly looked this season like he has plenty left in the tank, going 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB over 169 innings.

  • Gray was charged with the loss in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Wednesday. He gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks over 4.2 innings.

Gray started off with three scoreless frames but surrendered a solo homer to Luis Garcia in the fourth and was pulled with two on and two out in the fifth at 70 pitches. One of the inherited runners came around to score, and New York erupted for six runs the following inning. It was the veteran right-hander's shortest outing since late May, as he had covered at least five frames in 20 consecutive starts. Though the early playoff exit leaves a sour taste, it was still one of the best regular seasons of Gray's career with a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB over 169 innings.

  • Gray (18-5) earned the win Wednesday against Cleveland, striking out three while allowing four hits and one walk in six scoreless innings.

Gray scattered four singles on the evening in what was his final scheduled appearance of the regular season. The right-hander is heading into the playoffs with a ton of steam, having logged a quality start in four consecutive outings and seven of his last nine. Wednesday put a bow on an excellent regular season, which saw Gray post a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB over 169 innings.

  • Gray allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Thursday.

Gray put together a quality start, but he wasn't able to get the win since the Red Sox's offense didn't show up until the late innings. This was a third straight quality start for Gray, who has allowed six runs over 19.1 frames in September. He has pitched to a 2.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 146:45 K:BB through 163 innings over 28 starts this year. He is projected to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.

  • Gray (17-5) was tagged with the loss in Friday's game against the Royals, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings.

All three of the runs Gray allowed came over the first three innings of Friday's start. The veteran right-hander was able to get through six innings on 90 pitches (60 strikes) for his 18th quality start of the season, tied for sixth-most in the majors, but he didn't receive enough run support from his Red Sox teammates to avoid the loss. It was Gray's second loss in three starts, but it has still been a strong season for the 37-year-old, whose 17 wins are tied with Cristopher Sanchez for most in the majors. Gray will take a 2.76 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 156.2 innings into his next start, tentatively slated for next week on the road against the Rangers.
