Ronald Acuna Jr. Stays in Atlanta as Luis Robert Jr., Sonny Gray and Emilio Pagan Hit Free Agency: The Option Decisions That Move 2027 Fantasy Drafts
By Verdexed MLB Desk
The final wave of MLB contract-option decisions landed over the last three days, and several of them reshape the 2027 fantasy landscape. The Braves exercised their club options on Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies. The Rays kept ace Drew Rasmussen at $20 million. And the free agent pool grew by four notable names: outfielder Luis Robert Jr., starters Sonny Gray and Nick Pivetta, and closer Emilio Pagan.
Option decisions are due by November 2, the same day teams must extend qualifying offers, which are set at $23.15 million this winter. With the collective bargaining agreement expiring December 1, this offseason has a compressed feel, and the players who hit the market now could sign quickly or wait out a potential lockout.
The decisions at a glance
| Player | Team | Option | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ronald Acuna Jr. | ATL | $17M club | Exercised |
| Ozzie Albies | ATL | $7M club | Exercised |
| Drew Rasmussen | TB | $20M club | Exercised |
| Luis Robert Jr. | BAL | $20M club | Declined, $2M buyout |
| Nick Pivetta | SD | $14M club | Declined |
| Sonny Gray | BOS | $30M mutual | Declined, $10M buyout |
| Emilio Pagan | CIN | $10M player | Declined |
Atlanta keeps its core
Acuna's $17 million option was an easy call, and his contract includes another $17 million club option for 2028. For fantasy purposes, the important thing is stability: he stays at the top of a familiar Atlanta lineup, and his blend of power and speed keeps him in the first-round conversation for 2027 drafts whenever he is healthy.
Albies at $7 million is one of the most team-friendly deals in the league. He will be eligible for free agency after the 2027 season, which makes 2027 a contract year. He remains a useful middle infielder in fantasy with a power-speed profile at a position where that combination is scarce.
Rasmussen stays in Tampa, for now
The Rays picked up Rasmussen's option rather than pay a $500,000 buyout. The price escalated from $8 million to $20 million because he stayed healthy and made at least 28 starts, and he earned it: a 16-5 record with a 2.67 ERA in the regular season for the American League champions.
The catch is that $20 million is a large salary by Tampa's standards, and Rasmussen has only one year of team control left. Multiple reports expect the Rays to explore trading him this winter. For fantasy managers, the impact of a trade would depend almost entirely on the new park and the defense behind him. He is a top-25 starting pitcher for 2027 regardless of where he pitches, but watch his landing spot closely if he moves.
Luis Robert Jr. hits the market
The Orioles declined Robert's $20 million option and will pay him a $2 million buyout, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Robert played only three games for Baltimore before hamstring issues landed him on the injured list. That is the story of his career: elite tools, recurring injuries.
In fantasy, Robert will be one of the most debated outfielders of the 2027 draft season. When healthy, he provides power and speed that few outfielders can match. But his availability has been inconsistent, and his landing spot will matter. A team that can use him as a full-time center fielder in a hitter-friendly park would raise his ceiling. Draft him as a high-risk, high-reward OF3 until his health and new role are clear.
Pitchers join the pool: Gray, Pivetta and Pagan
Sonny Gray declined his $30 million mutual option and will collect a $10 million buyout. Reports say he is open to returning to Boston, but with several Red Sox starters returning from injury, a reunion is not expected to be a priority for the club. Gray is a veteran with strikeout upside who should land a short-term deal; his fantasy value depends heavily on the park and the defense behind him.
Nick Pivetta spent more than 130 days on the injured list this year, which converted his 2027 option into a $14 million club option. San Diego declined it, though the Padres can still negotiate a new deal. Pivetta's strikeout ability makes him a useful fantasy arm when healthy, but the injury time adds risk.
Emilio Pagan declined his $10 million player option with the Reds after going 5-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 25 saves in 28 chances. He is betting on a multiyear deal, and closers with recent save production tend to find one. Pagan's fantasy value is entirely about role. If he signs somewhere as the closer, he is a mid-tier saves source; if he lands in a setup role, his value drops sharply. Cincinnati now has a vacancy at closer, which is a situation to monitor.
The betting angle
Futures markets for 2027 will open in earnest after the major free agent signings, but these decisions already move the needle. Atlanta keeping Acuna and Albies maintains the Braves' lineup core. Tampa's decision on Rasmussen, and whether he is traded, will affect the defending AL champions' rotation and win total. And Robert, Gray, Pivetta and Pagan could each meaningfully upgrade a contender.

What to do in your league
In dynasty and keeper leagues, Acuna and Albies hold their value with their roles secure for 2027. Rasmussen is a hold, with some risk if he is traded to a hitter-friendly park. Robert is a buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues if a manager has given up on him, but only at a real discount. Pagan is a speculative hold until his role is known. And keep an eye on November 2: that is when qualifying offers are due and, according to MLB Trade Rumors, when free agents become eligible to sign with any team, though outlets differ on the exact timing.
