MLB Free Agency Opens Under a Lockout Clock: Tarik Skubal Leads the Market and the CBA Expires Dec. 1

The Milwaukee Brewers' Game 5 win on Wednesday night ended the 2026 season and started the most compressed offseason baseball has faced in five years. Free agency opens now, teams have five days to make option and qualifying-offer decisions, and the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players' union expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1. If the sides do not reach a new deal by then, owners are widely expected to lock out the players, freezing all signings and trades.

That gives the market roughly a month to work. Tarik Skubal, the two-time Cy Young winner, is the clear top free agent, and how quickly he and the rest of the class sign will shape 2027 fantasy drafts.

The calendar

The offseason runs on a schedule keyed to the end of the World Series. Here are the dates that matter, based on team and league offseason calendars published before the Series ended:

DateMilestone
Day after the SeriesEligible players become free agents; exclusive window with former club
Fifth day after the SeriesOption decisions and qualifying offers due; exclusive window ends
Early to mid-NovemberGM Meetings in Las Vegas
About 10 days after offersDeadline for players to accept or decline qualifying offers
Nov. 20Non-tender deadline for arbitration-eligible players
Dec. 1, 11:59 p.m. ETCollective bargaining agreement expires

The qualifying offer is worth $23.15 million this offseason, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, a 5.11 percent increase over last year's $22.025 million.

The lockout question

Negotiations have stalled on owners' push for a salary cap, which the players have rejected. Contract length limits, free-agency timelines and competitive balance are also reportedly on the table. MLB has already sent teams a memo outlining lockout procedures, and the expectation across the industry is that a work stoppage begins Dec. 2 if no agreement is reached.

The precedent is recent. The 2021-22 lockout began Dec. 2, 2021, and ended March 10, 2022, pushing Opening Day back a week. During that lockout, the free-agent market split into two frenzies: a burst of signings in the days before Dec. 1, and a sprint once the lockout lifted in March.

Agent Scott Boras has publicly argued that teams should sign players before the new agreement, when they have the most flexibility, and he singled out Skubal as the standout case. Whether clubs listen will define November.

The top of the class

Skubal leads every ranking by a wide margin. Behind him, the class includes a mix of hitters and pitchers who will move fantasy values depending on where they land:

Tarik SkubalSPTwo-time Cy Young winner; traded to Dodgers in-season
Freddy PeraltaSPPitched for the Rays in the World Series; traded in-season

Seiya SuzukiOFQualifying-offer eligible
Brandon Lowe2BPirates; qualifying-offer eligible

One important wrinkle: Skubal and Peralta are not eligible for qualifying offers because they were traded during the season. That means the team that signs either one will not surrender draft-pick compensation, which widens their markets. Trent Grisham has already received and accepted a qualifying offer.

Fantasy implications

Landing spots move pitching values more than hitting values. A pitcher's park, defense and run support can shift his fantasy value meaningfully, while elite hitters tend to produce wherever they go. Skubal is a fantasy ace in any uniform, but a move to a pitcher-friendly park with a strong lineup would push his win and strikeout totals higher.

A lockout delays clarity. If many top free agents are unsigned on Dec. 1, early-draft formats (best-ball and draft-and-hold leagues that open in the winter) will be drafting with unresolved roles. That creates value: players without a team are typically discounted in early ADP and rebound once they sign.

Watch the qualifying-offer decisions. Players who receive and decline offers carry draft-pick compensation, which can slow their markets. Hitters like Chisholm, Arozarena and Suzuki may sign later than their talent suggests if a lockout compresses the calendar.

Betting angle: futures markets

2027 futures markets will open well before rosters are settled. A team that signs Skubal before Dec. 1 will see its pennant and World Series odds shorten immediately, so bettors who want exposure to a likely suitor should consider acting before the signing rather than after. The risk is that a long lockout delays the 2027 season, which some outlets have raised as a worst-case scenario.

The Verdexed angle

Verdexed's MLB model will reset for 2027 once rosters stabilize and spring training begins. Until then, the MLB predictions page keeps the full 2026 log. Our MLB desk will track every major signing and what it means for fantasy and futures.

What's next

The fifth day after the World Series is the first big checkpoint: watch for option decisions and qualifying offers. After that, the GM Meetings in early November traditionally kick off serious negotiations. The real deadline, though, is Dec. 1. If Skubal signs before then, expect a cascade of moves behind him. If he does not, the market could freeze until spring.
