Latest news

  • Duran (0-1) was charged with a blown save and the loss in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against Atlanta on Tuesday. He allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout and no walks over two innings.

Interim manager Don Mattingly called upon his closer to begin the seventh inning with the Phillies leading 3-2, and Duran delivered a clean frame on 17 pitches. The right-hander returned for the eighth and retired the first two batters he faced, but an infield single and a hit-by-pitch set the table for Austin Riley to launch a three-run homer. Duran recorded more than three outs in just one of his 61 appearances during the regular season, so the multi-inning usage by Mattingly will likely be scrutinized heavily. The Phillies are now facing elimination after having their closer throw 27 pitches in Game 1.

  • Duran earned the save in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Brewers, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two in the ninth inning.

The Phillies jumped out to a 6-3 lead thanks to a three-run eighth inning, prompting the team to send out Duran in the ninth to secure the win. The 28-year-old right-hander was cruising after striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up an RBI single, but Duran managed to lock down the win for the Phillies for his 33rd save of the season, ninth most in the majors. He's earned the save in each of his last four outings and has a 1.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across 57.1 innings this season.

  • Duran struck out two while allowing one hit and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Mets.

That gives Duran a save on back-to-back days. The star closer's last blown save came July 27 in Miami, and he's recorded at least one punchout in seven consecutive appearances and 10 of his last 11. Duran sports a 1.76 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 79:9 K:BB over 56.1 innings this year, piling up 32 saves (34 chances) to match his career high.

  • Duran struck out two in a clean ninth inning for the save Wednesday against the Nationals.

Duran wasn't at his sharpest, landing just 13 of his 21 pitches for strikes, but Washington still was unable to muster a baserunner. The star closer hasn't blown a save since July 27 in Miami, tallying at least one strikeout in six consecutive outings and nine of his last 10. Duran has a 1.79 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a sparkling 77:9 K:BB over 55.1 innings this season, collecting 31 saves (33 opportunities) still with a chance to eclipse his career high of 32.

  • Duran struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 30th save of the season in a 4-2 win over Atlanta.

The right-hander hasn't blown a save chance since his last appearance in July, posting a 0.56 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB in 16 innings since the calendar flipped to August. Duran's 30 saves have him two shy of the career-high 32 he collected last season, and he's tied for third in the National League behind the Cardinals' Riley O'Brien (36) and the Padres' Mason Miller (32).

  • Duran notched a save against the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning.

Duran entered in the ninth frame tasked with protecting a one-run lead. Arizona got two runners aboard on a pair of infield singles, and Duran put the tying run on third base when he uncorked a two-out wild pitch. However, he was able to close things out by getting Gabriel Moreno to ground out to shortstop. The All-Star closer picked up his 29th save of the campaign, five of which came during August. Over the course of 14 appearances in the month, he allowed just one earned run while posting a 16:3 K:BB across 15 innings.
