NFL Week 9 Early Planner: Steelers and Titans on Bye, Jaguars at Ravens on Thursday and Bengals-Falcons in Madrid

Week 8 is not over yet, but the smartest fantasy managers are already planning for Week 9. The good news: it is one of the lightest bye weeks of the season, with only the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans off. The complication is timing. Week 9 opens with the Jaguars at the Ravens on Thursday, November 5, and includes an international game, Bengals vs. Falcons in Madrid, that kicks off hours before the traditional early window. If you do not set those players before Thursday and Sunday morning, you will lose them.

Here is what to plan for, which players to replace and where to look for value before the waiver wire runs.

Several schedule listings disagree on the exact kickoff time of the Madrid game, so confirm it in your league app before Sunday. What matters for fantasy is that it starts well before the 1 p.m. ET window, so any Bengals or Falcons player must be locked in early.

Who you lose to the bye

Steelers: Running back Jaylen Warren has been the more involved back in a two-back system with Rico Dowdle and has been a steady RB2 for much of the season. Receiver DK Metcalf has been inconsistent but remains Pittsburgh's top target and a weekly WR2/WR3. Rico Dowdle is a bench-level player in most formats. The Steelers defense was billed as an elite streaming option heading into Week 8, which matters more than it sounds, since ESPN's bye-week analysis noted that the Steelers D/ST and Titans rookie Carnell Tate are about the only above-replacement-level players lost this week.

Titans: Tate, the rookie receiver, has been Tennessee's most valuable fantasy piece when healthy, although he is out for Week 8 with an injury. Quarterback Cam Ward has had flashes but is not a starting option in standard one-quarterback leagues.

The bottom line: if you have Warren or Metcalf, you need a Week 9 replacement. If you rely on the Steelers defense, you need a streamer. Most other managers will barely feel this bye week.

The Thursday night game

Jaguars at Ravens is the game most likely to catch fantasy managers off guard. Baltimore welcomed Lamar Jackson back this week after he missed three games with an ankle injury, and Jacksonville comes in leading the AFC South. Both offenses have fantasy-relevant pieces: Jackson and the Ravens' run game and receivers on one side, and Trevor Lawrence, Parker Washington and the Jaguars backfield on the other.

Two items to watch before Thursday: how Jackson's ankle holds up against Buffalo on Sunday, and whether the Jaguars trade Brian Thomas Jr. before the game, since the deadline is November 10. A short week also tends to hurt players coming off soft-tissue injuries, so check Jakobi Meyers' status (hamstring/ankle) on Monday's estimated practice report.

The Madrid game

Bengals vs. Falcons is a strong fantasy game on paper. Atlanta has Bijan Robinson, who has been seeing an increased workload, and Cincinnati enters Week 8 as the slate's biggest favorite, a sign of how the market views its offense. The international timing means you need to set lineups early on Sunday, but the bigger risk is the Monday and Tuesday waiver process: any player you want to pick up from these two teams needs to be claimed before the game kicks off.

Waiver and streaming targets

With so few teams on bye, Week 9 is a good week to plan ahead rather than react. A few ideas:

Quarterback streaming: One 2026 bye-week guide singled out Matthew Stafford at Washington as the best Week 9 matchup among quarterbacks drafted as QB2s. If you are covering for an injury or a bad matchup, the Rams' passing game against the Commanders is worth targeting.

Defense streaming: Replacing the Steelers defense means looking for a unit facing a backup quarterback or a turnover-prone offense. The Eagles, who host the Giants, and the Lions, who visit Miami, are matchups to check once Week 8 injuries are settled.

Receiver depth: If you are replacing Metcalf, the Week 8 Sunday night game is worth watching for Eagles rookie Makai Lemon, who is projected to lead Philadelphia's receivers with DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks out. Smith's hamstring may still be an issue in Week 9.

The Verdexed angle

Verdexed's model publishes its weekly NFL game picks at the start of each week. Look for the Week 9 picks piece and the NFL predictions page once the lines are set early this week. For now, the Week 8 board is in the Week 8 picks piece.

From a betting perspective, the most interesting Week 9 lines to watch are Thursday night, where Jackson's health after a full game will move the number, and Monday night in Minnesota, where the Bills' and Vikings' Week 8 results will shape the early market.

What to do this week

If you roster Warren, Metcalf or the Steelers defense, use the waiver run on Tuesday or Wednesday to grab a replacement. Set your Jaguars and Ravens players by Thursday night. Set your Bengals and Falcons players before the Madrid kickoff Sunday morning. And watch the injury reports on Monday, because a Thursday game leaves little time for players with questionable tags to prove they are healthy.
