NFL Week 9 DFS Main Slate Breakdown: Cowboys at Colts and Raiders at 49ers Are the Stacks, and Patrick Mahomes Is the Value Quarterback

The Week 9 main slate has two games that clearly stand above the rest. Cowboys at Colts and Raiders at 49ers both carry totals in the low 50s at most books, and both feature quarterbacks priced below their ceilings. Add a value-priced Patrick Mahomes with a Chiefs team total near 27.5, and the slate has more than enough paths to a tournament-winning score. With the Steelers and Titans on bye, Thursday's Jaguars-Ravens game off the main slate and the Bengals-Falcons game in Madrid kicking off in the morning, roster construction comes down to which shootout to trust.

The slate at a glance

Here is the betting market's view of the key main-slate games, using the range of numbers posted across major books early in the week. Cowboys-Colts has flipped between a short Dallas and a short Indianapolis favorite depending on the book, so it is listed as a toss-up.

Primary stack: Cowboys at Colts

This game has carried the week's top total at several books since lines opened. Dak Prescott at $6,500 with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens is the obvious build, and it will be popular for good reason: Dallas funnels its targets through two receivers, and a near pick'em with a total in the low 50s suggests both offenses will have to keep scoring.

The run-back is where builds separate. Daniel Jones has held onto the Colts job despite nine interceptions, and interceptions in a shootout are not a disaster for DFS. Tight end Tyler Warren and receiver Josh Downs both played last week, and either works as a one-off bring-back. The Jonathan Taylor trade saga hangs over the backfield: as long as he is a Colt on Sunday, he is a strong running back play, but the November 10 deadline means he is a news-dependent pivot to watch.

Secondary stack: Raiders at 49ers

San Francisco returns from its bye with Christian McCaffrey expected to play through a mild hamstring strain and Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel on track to return. Brock Purdy at $6,800 is the quarterback in a game with one of the highest team totals on the board, and a stack with George Kittle captures most of the 49ers' scoring paths.

The contrarian version runs through Las Vegas. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdowns against the Jets, Brock Bowers is a weekly TE1 whose targets spike when the Raiders trail, and a Cousins and Bowers stack with a single 49ers bring-back will be far less owned than the Purdy builds.

Value quarterback: Patrick Mahomes

DraftKings priced Mahomes as the QB7 at $6,100 even though he projects near the top five. He threw for more than 320 yards and three touchdowns in Denver, Rashee Rice is back as his top target, and the Jets have lost three straight. Pairing Mahomes with Rice is a cash-game build, and adding rookie Emmett Johnson after his 128-yard breakout gives tournament lineups a cheap correlated piece.

Running backs

Tyler Allgeier is the chalk value of the slate. With Jeremiyah Love on injured reserve and Bam Knight in the concussion protocol, Allgeier should see a near-monopoly on Arizona's backfield touches after running for 147 yards and two scores in Dallas. The caveat is a double-digit road spread, which makes him a strong cash play but a fade candidate in large-field tournaments, where his ownership will be high.

McCaffrey is the highest-floor back on the slate if he is confirmed active. Jahmyr Gibbs is the leverage pivot: he ran for 153 yards against Minnesota last week, the Lions-Dolphins total is near 50, and the McCaffrey and Allgeier chalk should keep his ownership reasonable.

Breece Hall is expected back for the Jets, but a likely split with Braelon Allen and a double-digit spread make both Jets backs tournament-only plays.

Receivers and tight ends

Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL in receiving yards and caught six passes for 118 yards and a touchdown on Monday night. He is the slate's most reliable receiver at a premium price, though Seattle's spread could limit his fourth-quarter volume.

Trey McBride is the safest tight end play outside the top two games. He has at least seven catches in 10 straight games, and Arizona will be throwing from behind in Seattle.

Christian Watson is a risk-reward play. He broke a rib against Carolina and still caught eight passes for 113 yards. If he is active, his salary should not have caught up to that production, and the Packers-Patriots total near 47 supports him.

Ownership leverage

The chalk is likely to cluster on Allgeier, Prescott stacks and McCaffrey. The best leverage comes from building around the other game script. A Lions and Dolphins stack with Gibbs and Detroit's passing game, or a Love and Watson stack in Foxborough, captures high-total games that will draw a fraction of the Cowboys-Colts ownership.

Low-total games like Giants at Eagles are best left to single plays. Both offenses have been inconsistent, and a total near 40 makes it the slate's lowest-scoring environment.

The Verdexed plan

The cash-game core is Mahomes, Allgeier and McBride, with Smith-Njigba as the premium receiver. Tournaments should start from one of the two big stacks and pivot off the chalk running backs with Gibbs or McCaffrey.
