Jets at Chiefs Preview: Patrick Mahomes Gets a Reeling Jets Defense After the Denver Collapse, and Kansas City Lays Nearly 10
By Verdexed NFL Desk

The Kansas City Chiefs return to Arrowhead on Sunday looking to wash out the taste of a 28-24 loss in Denver, and the schedule hands them the 2-6 New York Jets. Kansas City let a 24-13 fourth-quarter lead slip as the Broncos scored 15 unanswered points, a late touchdown to Rashee Rice was wiped out by a false start, and the Chiefs fell to 5-2, a half-game behind 6-2 Denver in the AFC West. The market expects a response: Kansas City is favored by 9.5 to 10 points with a total of 45.5 to 46.5.
For fantasy managers, this is a spot to lean into Chiefs pass-catchers and to approach the Jets carefully, with Breece Hall expected back from a quad injury and the Jets' receiving room in transition.
Where both teams stand
The Chiefs' offense was not the problem in Denver. Patrick Mahomes threw for more than 320 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and the passing game found new life with Rice back from a hamstring injury and rookie Emmett Johnson breaking out. The ground game was the weak spot: Kenneth Walker III was held to 69 yards on 21 carries.
The Jets have lost three straight and blew a 23-14 lead of their own in a 38-33 loss to the Raiders. Geno Smith threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns but ended the game with an interception in the end zone. The bright spot was Adonai Mitchell, who caught seven passes for 142 yards and a score, and Braelon Allen, who carried the run game during Hall's absence.
Here is a snapshot of the key Week 8 lines from both sides.
| Player | Team | Week 8 line | Week 9 note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patrick Mahomes | KC | 300-plus yards, 3 TD, 0 INT | Value-priced in DFS |
| Rashee Rice | KC | 7 catches, 53 yards, 1 TD | Team-high targets in return |
| Emmett Johnson | KC | 5 catches, 128 yards, 1 TD | First career touchdown |
| Kenneth Walker III | KC | 21 carries, 69 yards | Plus matchup on paper |
| Geno Smith | NYJ | 290 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT | Faces a road favorite |
| Adonai Mitchell | NYJ | 7 catches, 142 yards, 1 TD | Waiver add of the week |
Fantasy outlook: Chiefs
Mahomes is a top-five quarterback this week. DraftKings priced him as the QB7 at $6,100 even though industry projections have him near the top five, and Kansas City's implied team total sits around 27.5 points, among the highest on the main slate. That is the combination DFS players want: a ceiling quarterback at a discount in a game his team should control.
Rice is back to WR1 status. He led the team in targets and receptions in his first game back, and the red-zone connection was there, with a second touchdown erased only by a penalty. Johnson's 128-yard breakout makes him a speculative add in deeper leagues and a cheap DFS dart, but one big game from a rookie with a modest target share is not yet a weekly start.
Walker is the hardest Chiefs call. His efficiency in Denver was poor, but a double-digit favorite usually leans on the run late, and that kind of game script tends to deliver carries and goal-line chances. He is a solid RB2 with touchdown upside.
Fantasy outlook: Jets
Hall's expected return complicates a backfield that had been simple. Rapoport reported Hall is good to go, Reich said he assumes Hall is the lead back, and the expectation around the team is a near even split in his first game. Hall is a flex and Allen is a deep-league flex in this matchup, with both capped by a likely negative game script.
Mitchell is the receiver to trust. He has emerged as the downfield option in an offense that has to throw from behind, and Smith has been willing to push the ball. As a road underdog of this size, the Jets should be throwing late, which supports Mitchell as a WR3 with upside. Garrett Wilson, who said last week that he will not request a trade, remains the steadier target-share play; check Friday's report for his status.
Smith is a streaming option in two-quarterback leagues only. Garbage-time volume is real, but the interceptions are too.
Betting angle
The spread has held in the 9.5 to 10 range, and ESPN reported the total opened lower and has climbed toward 46.5. Two things are pushing it: Kansas City's offense scored 24 points or more in a loss and gets a softer defense at home, and the Jets have shown they can score in shootouts, as the 33 points against Las Vegas showed.
The argument for the Jets covering is that Kansas City has been tight in one-score games and has struggled to put away opponents in the fourth quarter. The argument for the Chiefs is a defense facing a quarterback who has turned the ball over in key spots and a coaching staff with a full week to correct the Denver collapse. Neither side is a clear edge against a number this large, which makes the Chiefs' team total the cleaner way to express a Kansas City view.

What's next
The Chiefs are trying to keep pace with Denver before the second half of the division schedule, and they have been linked to the receiver market ahead of the November 10 trade deadline. Any addition would further dilute Johnson's role, so managers chasing the rookie should treat him as a short-term play. For the Jets, the story is the deadline and Hall's health: a clean game from Hall would firm up his role for the rest of the season and push Allen back toward a handcuff.
