Falcons at Buccaneers Preview: Emeka Egbuka Is Out Again, Bucky Irving Leads the League's Hottest Run Game, and Bijan Robinson Gets a Bigger Load
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Emeka Egbuka is out for Sunday's NFC South game against Atlanta, the Buccaneers confirmed on Friday, which leaves Tampa Bay without its top young receiver for a second straight week. That might not matter as much as it sounds. The Bucs ran for 258 yards in a 43-13 rout of Carolina last Sunday while Baker Mayfield threw only 11 passes, and Bucky Irving is healthy and set to carry the load again. Across the field, Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons arrive off a win that handed San Francisco its first loss, with Bijan Robinson's workload climbing.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET on FOX at Raymond James Stadium. Tampa Bay is a short home favorite, and the total sits in the mid-40s at most books.
The injury report
Egbuka cleared the concussion protocol this week, but a foot injury keeps him sidelined. He was limited Thursday and did not practice Friday, and head coach Todd Bowles confirmed he will not play. Running back Kenny Gainwell (hip) and right tackle Luke Goedeke (calf) are both questionable, though Gainwell practiced fully on Friday. Irving sat Thursday for rest and was a full participant Friday, with no game designation.
Atlanta has ruled out running back Brian Robinson Jr., and cornerback A.J. Terrell was limited on Thursday.
| Player | Team | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|

| Luke Goedeke | Buccaneers | Questionable | Calf, limited Friday |

| A.J. Terrell | Falcons | Limited Thursday | Monitor |
Tampa Bay's ground game is the story
Last week's blowout of Carolina was a run-game clinic, and the formula should not change much without Egbuka. Irving is the clear lead back, and a home favorite with a short-handed receiver room is the textbook spot for another 20-plus touch day. Gainwell's availability matters mostly for passing downs; if he is limited, Irving's receiving work grows too.
That makes Irving a locked-in RB1 this week. The concern is efficiency, not volume: Atlanta's front has seen the run film from Week 7 and will load the box. Even so, few backs on the slate have a cleaner path to touches.
Baker Mayfield is the harder call. Eleven pass attempts is an outlier, and a closer game would force more throwing, but without Egbuka the passing tree is narrower. He profiles as a low-end QB1 or high-end QB2 with a modest ceiling unless Atlanta builds a lead. The remaining Bucs receivers carry WR3 value on volume, with Egbuka's absence funneling more of the short-area targets to the slot and the tight ends.
Atlanta's side: Bijan and Penix
Robinson's workload has been climbing, and Brian Robinson Jr.'s absence removes the one back who could siphon short-yardage work. Bijan Robinson is an every-week RB1 regardless, but this is a full-workload setup, and his receiving role keeps him valuable even if the Falcons fall behind. Start him with confidence.
Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdowns against San Francisco and has been a weekly waiver add for streamers. Against a Tampa Bay defense that just smothered Carolina, he is a matchup-neutral QB2 with spike-week upside. Superflex managers should start him; one-quarterback leagues can find safer options.
Drake London remains Penix's top target and an obvious WR1-tier start. Kyle Pitts is the tight end to watch if Terrell's limited week leads the Falcons to lean into the middle of the field.
The betting angle
Tampa Bay opened as roughly a 1.5-point favorite and moved to 2.5 at multiple books during the week, a modest move toward the Bucs. The total ranges from about 44.5 to the high 40s depending on the book and the timestamp. Two trends will draw attention: the Buccaneers are 0-4 against the spread at home this season, and the Falcons are 3-3 against the spread as underdogs.
The game script logic points to the under: both teams want to run, Tampa Bay is missing its top receiver, and Mayfield's volume has been suppressed. Against that, a game between division rivals with two capable quarterbacks rarely stays dull for four quarters. Start, sit and DFS notes
Start: Bucky Irving, Bijan Robinson, Drake London.
Flex with confidence: Tampa Bay's top healthy receiver, who inherits Egbuka's share of short targets.
Superflex only: Michael Penix Jr., Baker Mayfield.
DFS leverage: Irving will be popular after the Carolina game. In tournaments, pairing Bijan Robinson with a Falcons pass-catcher is a contrarian way to bet on Atlanta keeping pace, while Irving lineups are the chalk path to a Bucs win.
What's next
The winner takes a step toward control of the NFC South before the deadline-week chaos. For Tampa Bay, the bigger question is Egbuka's timeline: a foot injury that has now cost him consecutive games is worth monitoring on Wednesday, because a third straight absence would push managers to treat him as a bench stash rather than a weekly decision.
