The Philadelphia Eagles visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC and Peacock) in a matchup that looked like an NFC East heavyweight bout in August and now features two teams fighting for their seasons. Tanner McKee makes another start for Philadelphia in place of Jalen Hurts, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with blood clots. Washington, at 1-4-1, is a surprising favorite of 4.5 to 5.5 points with Jayden Daniels healthy at home.

The injury report on the Philadelphia side is the story of the week. Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith both sat out Wednesday's estimated report, and how those two practice on Thursday and Friday will shape every fantasy decision in this game.

The Eagles' injury picture

Philadelphia held a walkthrough rather than a full practice on Wednesday, so its report was an estimate of how players would have participated. Six players were listed as non-participants, including:

PlayerInjuryWednesday (estimated)
Saquon Barkley, RBHamstring / backDid not participate
DeVonta Smith, WRHamstringDid not participate
Dontayvion Wicks, WRNot specifiedDid not participate
Jalen Hurts, QBBlood clotsInjured reserve

Barkley left Monday night's 38-21 loss in Dallas with a back injury after nine touches for 71 yards. He said afterward that his hamstring came out fine, but the team has not announced a diagnosis. He will need to be upgraded to at least a limited practice to have a realistic chance to play.

Tanner McKee's outlook

McKee is the starter, with Joe Milton listed as the backup on the team's depth chart. His first start, a 25-14 home loss to Carolina, showed both the volume and the limitations: he completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. That is a lot of throwing for very little yardage, and it reflected a game script in which the Eagles chased points.

Without Barkley and Smith, McKee's supporting cast thins considerably. A.J. Brown is no longer in Philadelphia, so the receiving load falls on whoever is healthy among Smith, Wicks and the tight ends. In fantasy terms, McKee is a two-quarterback-league option only. His floor is a game with lots of short completions and limited touchdowns.

Washington: healthy at quarterback, thin on the outside

Daniels was a full participant on Wednesday despite still being listed with the left elbow he dislocated last month. Sunday will be his third consecutive start since returning. His supporting cast is the issue. Terry McLaurin is on injured reserve with a season-ending torn patellar tendon, and left tackle Laremy Tunsil is also on IR.

The Commanders also held out several players on Wednesday:

PlayerInjuryWednesday
Stefon Diggs, WRHand, hamstring, restDid not participate
John Bates, TEShoulderDid not participate
Javon Kinlaw, DTKneeDid not participate

Head coach Dan Quinn said Kinlaw is unlikely to play. Diggs' listing included a rest component, which is common for a veteran midweek, but his hamstring is worth monitoring because he has become Daniels' top target with McLaurin gone.

Fantasy fallout

Start Jayden Daniels. He is healthy, he is at home, and his rushing gives him a floor no matter who is catching passes. Philadelphia's defense has been leaky in recent weeks, and the Eagles' offense is unlikely to sustain long drives, which should mean extra possessions for Washington.

Start Stefon Diggs if he practices by Friday. With McLaurin out, Diggs' target share should climb. A rest day on Wednesday is not a red flag on its own.

Barkley is a wait-and-see. If he practices in full by Friday, he is a borderline RB1 because of his volume. If he is limited all week, he becomes a risky flex in a game where Philadelphia may trail. The Sunday night kickoff gives managers time to see inactives, but it also means you need a fallback from the late window or Monday night.

Fade Eagles receivers other than Smith. If Smith misses, the remaining options are low-floor plays tied to a backup quarterback.

Betting angle

The market has Washington at -5.5 at most books (a few have -4.5) with a total of 40.5, the lowest of any Sunday game this week. That total reflects the Eagles' quarterback situation and Washington's thin receiving corps. Two angles stand out.

First, the spread is sensitive to Barkley's status. If he is ruled out, expect the line to move toward six. If he plays, the Eagles become more competitive on the ground against a Washington run defense that has struggled this season.

Second, the total is low for a reason. McKee's first start produced 14 points against a defense that is not elite, and Washington's offense without McLaurin has stalled. Unless both stars play for Philadelphia, the under is the more defensible side.

The Verdexed model take

Verdexed's model incorporates official statuses when teams file their final injury reports, so its view of this game will settle after Friday's designations. For the model's current read, see the NFL predictions page and the Week 8 picks.

What's next

The losing team here falls further out of the NFC playoff picture before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. For Philadelphia, a loss with McKee raises the question of whether the front office pursues a veteran quarterback. For Washington, a loss at 1-5-1 would push the Commanders toward sell mode. Either way, fantasy managers should watch Thursday's practice report for Barkley and Smith first: that is where this game's fantasy value is decided.
