Browns at Titans Preview: Deshaun Watson and First-Place Cleveland Visit Cam Ward in the Lowest-Total Game of Week 7

The AFC North leaders head to Nashville on Sunday. The 4-2 Cleveland Browns, who took first place in the division with last week's 13-10 win over Baltimore, visit the 1-5 Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. Deshaun Watson starts for Cleveland with Dillon Gabriel (back) ruled out, and Tennessee's Cam Ward faces one of the league's most aggressive defenses with his top receiver, Calvin Ridley, questionable with a hip injury.

The betting market sees a grinder. Cleveland is a short favorite, between 1.5 and 2.5 points depending on the book, and the total sits around 37.5 to 38.5, the lowest on the Week 7 board. For fantasy managers, that number is the whole story: this is a game to mine for defenses, not for offensive upside.

The injury reports

The table below lists the key designations from both teams' final reports.

BrownsTeven Jenkins, GBackOut
BrownsDenzel Ward, CBHandQuestionableexpected to play
BrownsGrant Delpit, SConcussion, shoulderQuestionable
BrownsDylan Sampson, RBKneeQuestionable
TitansCalvin Ridley, WRHipQuestionable
TitansTyjae Spears, RBUndisclosedQuestionable

Ridley's status is the most important for fantasy. He was limited Wednesday and did not practice Thursday or Friday, which is a concerning pattern for a player listed as questionable. Head coach Todd Monken said he expects Ward to play for Cleveland, which matters because the Browns' secondary is a key part of the defensive matchup.

Gabriel's situation is a longer-term roster question for Cleveland. He has been sidelined with the back injury since the preseason and is on injured reserve, with reports indicating the team must decide soon whether to activate him. It does not affect Sunday: Watson is the starter, and Taylen Green is the projected third quarterback.

Cleveland: winning with defense

The Browns' formula is simple. The defense creates pressure and turnovers, and the offense does just enough. Last week's win over the Ravens was the template: Cleveland held Baltimore scoreless after the Ravens' first two possessions and won on a late field goal. Watson has been efficient in the fourth quarter, but the offense is not built to win shootouts.

Running back Quinshon Judkins is the fantasy piece to watch. Reports on his status conflict: one outlet had him removed from the injury report after an ankle issue, while another listed him as questionable. If he is active, he is a volume-based RB2 against a Tennessee defense that will be on the field a lot. If Judkins is limited and Sampson cannot go, the Browns' backfield gets thin quickly, so check the inactive list at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Watson himself is not a fantasy start in one-quarterback leagues. The low total and Cleveland's run-first approach cap his passing volume, and he is a Superflex option at best.

Tennessee: Ward's growing pains

Ward has completed 109 of 177 passes for 998 yards and four touchdowns through six games, and he has yet to throw for 300 yards in a game. Those are the numbers of a young quarterback in a difficult situation rather than a fantasy asset, and facing a Browns pass rush that thrives on pressure makes this a tough spot.

The one encouraging sign for Tennessee came last week, when the Titans beat the Colts for their first win, sacking Daniel Jones six times. The Titans' defense showed it can make plays, and that is the part of this team that matters for fantasy this week.

If Ridley plays, he is a low-end flex in a difficult matchup. If he sits, the Titans' passing game becomes even harder to trust, and nobody else in the receiver room is a confident start. Spears' questionable tag clouds the backfield, and a low team total limits the ceiling of whichever Titans back handles the work.

Fantasy fallout

Start the Browns defense. Cleveland's defense is one of the best streaming plays of the week: a pass rush built to pressure a young quarterback, a low game total, and an opponent that has struggled to score. Verdexed's Week 7 streamers column flagged the Browns defense earlier in the week, and Friday's reports only strengthened the case.

The Titans defense is a deep-league streamer. Tennessee's defense showed against Indianapolis that it can get to the quarterback, and a low-scoring game limits the points it can allow.

Judkins is a start if active. Ridley is a flex if active, and a bench if he is limited in warmups. Watson, Ward and the rest of both offenses should be on fantasy benches.

Betting angle

A total in the 37.5 to 38.5 range is the lowest of the week for a reason. Both offenses are limited, both defenses are capable, and the game script favors long drives and field goals. Cleveland's short spread reflects a team built to win close games, like the 13-10 win over Baltimore, rather than to pull away.

What's next

A Browns win would keep Cleveland in first place in the AFC North heading into the second half of the season, and with Baltimore playing without Lamar Jackson again on Sunday, the division race could tilt further in Cleveland's favor. For Tennessee, the season is about Ward's development, and every week against a defense like this one is a measuring stick. For fantasy managers, the takeaway is simple: play the defenses, check Judkins and Ridley at the inactive list, and look elsewhere for offensive upside.
