Buccaneers at Panthers Preview: Baker Mayfield Starts Without Emeka Egbuka as Bryce Young Leads the NFL's Top Passing Attack
By Verdexed NFL Desk

Baker Mayfield is back, and he is walking into a game Tampa Bay can barely afford to lose. Todd Bowles told reporters Friday that Mayfield will start Sunday at Carolina after missing three games with a dislocated right thumb, even though the official report lists him as questionable. The Buccaneers are 1-5. The Panthers are 3-2, lead the NFC South and are a field-goal favorite at home. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium.
The return comes with a catch. Tampa Bay ruled out its top receiver, Emeka Egbuka (concussion, foot), along with right tackle Luke Goedeke (calf) and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib). That changes how fantasy managers should treat every Buccaneers skill player and makes Carolina's receivers more interesting than usual.
Mayfield's thumb and the backup plan
Mayfield was a full participant in practice all week, which is why Bowles was comfortable naming him the starter. The questionable tag is about the thumb on his throwing hand, which is the kind of injury that can affect grip and ball placement in a way a practice report does not capture. Bowles said the team would discuss carrying a third quarterback on Sunday as a precaution, a sign the staff wants a fallback in case the hand does not hold up.
Rookie Jalon Daniels started in Mayfield's absence. He is the next man in if anything goes wrong, and he should not be on fantasy rosters outside of the deepest Superflex leagues.
For fantasy purposes, Mayfield is a QB2 this week rather than a confident starter. The return from a hand injury, the loss of his best receiver and a banged-up right side of the offensive line all point to a lower ceiling. Managers in need of a bye-week replacement can do better.
Who catches the ball without Egbuka
The table below lays out the Tampa Bay receiving room for Sunday.
| Player | Week 7 status | Fantasy outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Emeka Egbuka | Out (concussion, foot) | Bench |
| Chris Godwin | Active, practiced Friday | WR2 |
| Ted Hurst | Active | Deep-league flex |
| Tez Johnson | Active | Boom-or-bust flex |
Chris Godwin is the main beneficiary. He missed Thursday's practice, but the team listed it as rest rather than an injury, and he was back on the field Friday. With Egbuka out and Mike Evans now in San Francisco, Godwin is the clear first read and a reasonable WR2 in PPR formats.
Ted Hurst goes from a part-time role to one of the top two receivers in the formation. That kind of snap jump is what makes a waiver pickup worth a flex spot in deeper leagues. Tez Johnson is the big-play option, a boom-or-bust flex whose value depends on one or two downfield shots landing.
The matchup is middling. Carolina's pass defense has allowed few touchdowns through the air but sits in the middle of the league in yards allowed, and the Panthers are thin on the outside, with starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve. That is the softest part of the Carolina roster, and Godwin is the player best placed to exploit it.
Bryce Young is the best fantasy play in this game
The Carolina side is where the upside lives. Bryce Young has averaged a league-leading 309.8 passing yards per game through his five starts, and the Panthers have the NFL's top-ranked passing attack. He shredded Philadelphia in a 25-14 win last week, and he now faces a Tampa Bay secondary without Winfield, its most important defensive back.
Young is listed on the injury report with a knee issue but is expected to play. In a week with four teams on bye, he is a viable starter in one-quarterback leagues and a strong Superflex play.
Tetairoa McMillan is Young's top target and a WR2 with weekly WR1 upside, and Jalen Coker is a flex option who benefits from the attention McMillan draws. With Winfield out, the middle of the field should be more open than usual, which also helps whoever is running the shorter routes.
Betting angle
Carolina opened as a home favorite by about three points, and the number has held between 3 and 3.5 at most books even after Mayfield was named the starter. That tells you the market is not giving Tampa Bay much credit for the return, mostly because of the absences around him.
The case for the Buccaneers is Mayfield himself: a starting-caliber veteran replacing a rookie is usually worth more than the line has moved here. The case for Carolina is that the Panthers are the better, healthier offense, and the Tampa Bay injuries hit the two spots (top receiver and right tackle) that matter most against a pass rush. For the model's view on the side and total, check the NFL predictions page and the Week 7 picks.
For props, Young's passing-yard line is the obvious place to look, given his weekly volume and a secondary missing its leader. On the Tampa Bay side, Godwin's receptions are the most stable number, since he should see a target share well above his usual role.
What it means
This is close to a must-win for the Buccaneers. A loss would drop them to 1-6 and three games behind Carolina in the division before November. A win would put them back in the conversation and show that the 1-5 start was largely about Mayfield's absence.
For fantasy managers, the instructions are simple. Start Young, McMillan and Godwin. Treat Mayfield as a QB2, and use Hurst and Johnson only in deep leagues or as a contrarian DFS play. Keep an eye on the inactive list for Bryce Young's knee and for any change to Mayfield's status, but both quarterbacks are expected to start.
