Raiders at 49ers Preview: Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans and Nick Bosa Could Return From the Bye as San Francisco Lays Nearly 10

The San Francisco 49ers come out of their Week 8 bye at 6-1 and potentially healthier than they have been in a month. Kyle Shanahan described Christian McCaffrey's injury as a mild hamstring strain and the team expects him ready, Mike Evans (Achilles tendinitis) and Deebo Samuel (hamstring) are on track to return after the week off, and the 49ers hope Nick Bosa can come back from a calf injury that has cost him five games. The visiting Las Vegas Raiders are 4-4 after snapping a four-game skid with a 38-33 comeback win over the Jets. San Francisco is favored by roughly 9.5 to 10 points, and some books list the total as high as 52.5, which would make it one of the highest on the Week 9 board.

For fantasy managers, the 49ers' return list decides who starts in one of the best scoring environments of the week.

Here is where the key names stood heading into the first practice of the week, based on team comments and beat reports. The official report comes later in the week.

Fantasy outlook: 49ers

McCaffrey is an RB1 if active, full stop. A rested McCaffrey at home as a large favorite is the kind of setup that produces multi-touchdown games, and there is no reason to bench him unless he is ruled out. Managers should watch Wednesday and Thursday practice participation, but the bye week timing works in his favor.

Brock Purdy is a high-end QB1 and one of the better DFS values on the slate. DraftKings priced him at $6,800 while San Francisco carries one of the highest implied team totals of the week. A healthy receiving corps raises his floor meaningfully.

The receivers are harder to sort. If both Evans and Samuel return, the 49ers' targets spread across Evans, Samuel and George Kittle, with McCaffrey also involved as a receiver. Evans is the best red-zone target of the group and a WR2 in his first game back. Samuel is a WR3 or flex after two missed games. Kittle, who caught eight passes for 88 yards in the loss to Atlanta before the bye, remains a top-five tight end.

Fantasy outlook: Raiders

Kirk Cousins led the comeback against the Jets with three touchdown passes, and the Raiders' offense has more pieces than a 4-4 record suggests. Brock Bowers scored again and remains an every-week TE1. In a game the Raiders are likely to trail, Bowers' target share should climb.

The backfield is split. Ashton Jeanty produced the Raiders' longest play against New York, a 45-yard catch and run that set up a score, while rookie Mike Washington Jr. handled 25 carries for 83 yards. That split makes Jeanty a lower-end RB2 whose receiving role matters most against a likely deficit, while Washington is a volume-based flex whose value depends on game script staying close.

Cousins is a streaming option in 12-team leagues. Volume will be there if the 49ers jump ahead, and Las Vegas has shown it can keep pace.

Betting angle

The two numbers that matter are the spread and the total. San Francisco opened as a 9.5-point favorite and some books now sit at 10, which reflects the expected returns from the bye. The total has varied widely across books, from roughly 46.5 to 52.5, and that spread of numbers is itself information: books are pricing different assumptions about how many of the 49ers' injured players suit up.

A healthy 49ers offense against a Raiders defense that gave up 33 points to the Jets argues for the over. The counterweight is a possible Bosa return, which would improve a 49ers pass rush that has been without its best player for five weeks. The best approach is to shop for the lowest total available and wait for Friday's report before committing to the over.

On the spread, the 49ers have lost only once and are rested, but nearly 10 points is a lot to lay against an offense with Bowers and a veteran quarterback who throws well from behind. DFS notes

This is a primary stacking game on the main slate. A Purdy stack with Kittle and one of Evans or Samuel captures the most likely scoring path, and adding Bowers as the run-back covers a Raiders comeback script. McCaffrey is the highest-floor running back play on the slate if he is confirmed active, and his ownership will reflect that.

The contrarian angle is Cousins. If the public stacks the 49ers heavily, a Cousins and Bowers stack with a single 49ers bring-back is a low-owned way to capture a shootout.

What's next

San Francisco has been the class of the NFC West, and the bye returns are the reason to expect the second half of the season to look like the first. The 49ers also added DeForest Buckner in a trade with Indianapolis, which strengthens the interior of a defense that is about to get Bosa back. The Raiders are trying to climb out of the AFC's middle tier, and a competitive game in Santa Clara would push them toward the wild-card conversation. For fantasy managers, the action items are simple: start McCaffrey, Purdy, Kittle and Bowers, and decide on Evans and Samuel after Friday's report.
