Javonte Williams Runs for 155 Yards as the Cowboys Beat the Eagles 38-21, and Saquon Barkley's Back Is the New Worry

The Dallas Cowboys ran the Philadelphia Eagles off their own field on Monday night. Javonte Williams carried 25 times for a career-high 155 yards and a touchdown, Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes on only 27 attempts, and Dallas beat Philadelphia 38-21 to end its own skid and push the Eagles to a fifth straight loss. Saquon Barkley returned from his hamstring injury, looked efficient early, and then exited in the third quarter with a tight back. For fantasy managers, Monday answered one question (Williams is a locked-in RB1 in this offense) and opened another (whether Barkley can be trusted in Week 8).

How Dallas won it

This was not a Prescott shootout. Dallas leaned on its line and its back, running 38 times for 204 yards against 27 dropbacks for 212 passing yards. Williams became the first Cowboys rusher to clear 150 yards since Ezekiel Elliott in 2018, and the volume came in every phase: early downs, third-and-short, and the fourth-quarter clock-killing drives after Dallas took control.

Prescott finished 15-of-27 for 212 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Two of the scores went to CeeDee Lamb, who caught five passes for 74 yards, and the third went to George Pickens, who added four catches for 57 yards. Dallas did not turn the ball over, and the Eagles did not record a single tackle for loss, which explains the rushing total better than any scheme note can.

Philadelphia actually led 21-20 in the third quarter after Tanner McKee found rookie Makai Lemon for a four-yard touchdown, the first of Lemon's career. From there it was all Dallas. DeMarvion Overshown intercepted a McKee pass intended for Dallas Goedert in the fourth quarter, a turnover on downs followed, and the Cowboys pulled away.

Here is how the key fantasy lines shook out.

The Saquon Barkley situation

Barkley was active after a week of hamstring questions, and the Eagles said afterward that he was on a pitch count with constant check-ins from the medical staff. By most accounts the hamstring held up; Barkley told reporters it felt great. The problem was his back, which tightened as the game went on. His last snap came in the third quarter.

Coverage of the injury was not uniform. At least one outlet reported that he aggravated the hamstring and tweaked the back early in the game, while ESPN's reporting framed the hamstring as fine and the back as the issue. Barkley said he did not expect the back to keep him out going forward, while deferring to the training staff. Nick Sirianni did not provide a formal update Monday night, so the first meaningful signal will be the Wednesday practice report.

That matters because the Eagles' backfield behind Barkley has already been thinned by Will Shipley's foot injury earlier in the season. If Barkley is limited or held out, Philadelphia's touches likely scatter across a committee rather than consolidating, which makes the replacement a low-ceiling flex rather than a plug-in RB2.

Fantasy fallout: Dallas

Javonte Williams is a weekly RB1 in this offense until something changes. Dallas has shown it will run the ball when the line is winning, and Williams is handling both the early-down work and the closing duty. The ceiling is touchdown-driven, but 25 carries is the kind of floor that holds up in any matchup.

CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are both every-week starters, but the game script on Monday is a reminder that Dallas will not always need 40 passes. Lamb's two touchdowns came on just five catches. Pickens remains the more volatile of the two, a boom WR2 whose weekly outcome rides on one or two downfield shots.

Dak Prescott is a mid-range QB1 rather than a locked top-five option. Three touchdowns on 27 attempts is efficient, but low volume caps his yardage, and Dallas now has a reason to keep leaning on the run.

Fantasy fallout: Philadelphia

The Eagles are 2-5 and have lost five straight, and Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season with blood clots in his lungs. McKee is a low-end QB2 in superflex formats and nothing more right now: 211 yards on 35 attempts with an interception is a stat line built on short completions.

Makai Lemon is the name to watch. The rookie scored his first touchdown and has been the most dependable piece in a receiver room hit by injuries. He is a speculative add in deeper leagues and a hold in leagues where he is already rostered. Dallas Goedert remains a volume tight end in a short-passing offense, which keeps him on the TE1 fringe.

The bigger concern is the defense. Philadelphia allowed 38 points and 416 total yards. Opposing running backs and the quarterbacks who face this unit get a bump in start/sit decisions until it proves otherwise.

The Verdexed angle

Monday's result is a clean example of a principle that shows up again and again in game modeling: offensive line play and turnover margin travel better than quarterback reputation. Dallas won the line of scrimmage, protected the ball and controlled time of possession. Philadelphia had no negative plays on defense and turned it over in the fourth quarter. When both trends hold, a team that controls the ground game tends to cover regardless of the spread.

For bettors, the Eagles are now a team whose offense cannot keep pace when it falls behind, which pushes totals in their games toward the opponent's rushing efficiency. The model's official Week 8 view will publish on the NFL predictions page and in the weekly picks post at /blog/nfl-week-8-picks-2026.

What to do in your league

Start Javonte Williams with confidence in Week 8. Keep Lamb and Pickens in lineups. Hold Barkley, but have a plan: if he is not practicing in full by Friday, the safer move is to pivot, especially in a week when the 49ers, Texans, Giants and Saints are all on bye and depth is already stretched. Add Lemon in deep leagues as a weekly bench stash with WR3 upside in a pass-heavy, trailing game script.
