Bucky Irving Leads a 258-Yard Rushing Day as the Buccaneers Rout the Panthers 43-13, and Baker Mayfield Throws Only 11 Passes

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Carolina Panthers 43-13 in Charlotte on Sunday without needing their quarterback to do much. Baker Mayfield, returning from a dislocated right thumb that cost him three games, attempted only 11 passes while wearing a protective glove, and the Buccaneers ran 49 times for 258 yards. Bucky Irving led the way with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Carolina lost starting right tackle Taylor Moton to a fractured fibula, and coach Dave Canales said after the game that Moton is out indefinitely.

For fantasy managers, this was a backfield game. The question for Week 8 is whether Tampa Bay keeps grinding on the ground or opens it up as Mayfield's thumb heals.

How the game played out

Mayfield finished 7-of-11 for 64 yards and a touchdown. According to a Fox Sports reporter cited in game coverage, the 11 attempts were one more than the franchise's record low. That was a choice, not a limitation: Tampa Bay was ahead, its running game was moving the ball, and there was no reason to put stress on a healing thumb.

Carolina helped. The Panthers turned the ball over four times, and Tampa Bay scored 20 points off those giveaways, including a 32-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Calijah Kancey. Bryce Young went 14-of-27 for 163 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions and lost a fumble. YaYa Diaby was credited with three sacks in CBS Sports' account.

The Tampa Bay backfield

Irving got the bell-cow work, but he was not the only back who produced. The table below shows the rushing split from the game, from the team's and wire accounts.

Irving also passed 3,000 career scrimmage yards, becoming the 12th running back in Buccaneers history to reach the mark, per the team. Accounts of Tucker's line vary slightly, but he broke a long touchdown run late in the game.

Irving remains an RB1. Twenty-four carries and two touchdowns are the volume and scoring profile managers want, and Tampa Bay's commitment to the run with Mayfield limited makes his floor even sturdier. He should be started every week.

Gainwell is the more interesting fantasy note. Fourteen carries for 88 yards is real work for a backup, and in a game script like this one, Tampa Bay is comfortable feeding two backs. Gainwell is a flex option in deeper leagues and a strong handcuff everywhere.

Tucker is a garbage-time beneficiary in this game. Do not chase the touchdown.

Mayfield and the passing game

Eleven attempts are not a fantasy line anyone can use, and receivers paid the price. The key question is how much of this was game plan and how much was the thumb. Tampa Bay coaches addressed the low volume after the game, and the clear read is that the team protected Mayfield because it could.

That changes in Week 8, when the Atlanta Falcons visit Raymond James Stadium on Nov. 1. Atlanta just beat the previously unbeaten 49ers behind Michael Penix Jr.'s three touchdown passes, and a competitive game would force Tampa Bay to throw more. Mayfield is a risky QB2 this week until his thumb is clearly closer to 100 percent. Tampa Bay's receivers are lower-floor starts than usual.

Carolina's line takes a hit

Moton's injury is the most consequential news on the Carolina side. A broken fibula is a multi-week absence at minimum, and losing a veteran right tackle hurts an offense that already struggled to protect Young on Sunday. Carolina's running game and Young's time in the pocket both take a hit.

The Panthers play next on Thursday night, Oct. 29, at the Green Bay Packers, a short week that leaves little time to adjust. For fantasy managers, Young is not a streaming option, and Carolina's skill players are downgrades until the line stabilizes.

The NFC South picture

The win sets up a meaningful Week 8 divisional game. Atlanta is 3-4 after beating San Francisco, Carolina is reeling after four turnovers and a lost starting tackle, and Tampa Bay just won its NFC South opener by 30. Mayfield said after the game that the team made a statement to itself, and the schedule now gives the Buccaneers a chance to back that up at home against the Falcons. For fantasy purposes, a competitive division race also means fewer blowouts and more four-quarter workloads for the starters.

The betting angle

Tampa Bay's win showed a formula: run the ball, win the turnover battle and let the defense take over. That formula can make Buccaneers games lower-scoring than their roster suggests, which is worth keeping in mind for unders when Mayfield is limited. The Falcons game is the test, because Atlanta can score.

Carolina is the opposite case. A team that turns it over four times and now loses a starting tackle heads to Lambeau on a short week. For the model's view of both games, see the NFL predictions page and the weekly picks piece at /blog/nfl-week-8-picks-2026.

What to do in your league

Start: Irving as an RB1.

Add: Gainwell in 12-team leagues as a handcuff with standalone flex value.

Downgrade: Mayfield and Tampa Bay's receivers until the thumb lets the offense open up.

Avoid: Carolina's offense on a short week at Green Bay.
