Anthony Black and the Magic Look Headed Past the Oct. 19 Extension Deadline, and His Ankle Is the More Urgent Fantasy Question

Anthony Black and the Orlando Magic are not expected to agree on a rookie-scale extension before the Oct. 19 deadline, according to multiple reports, which would send the 2023 lottery pick toward restricted free agency in the summer of 2027. Marc Stein has reported that the two sides had yet to engage in meaningful negotiations, and RealGM and Sportando have both described a deal as unlikely before the 6 p.m. cutoff on Monday, one day before the regular season opens.

At the same time, Black has not played in the preseason. He sprained his right ankle during voluntary workouts before training camp, and while head coach Sean Sweeney has said Black has definitely made progress and feels good, he has also indicated Black has not been doing full contact work. RotoWire listed an estimated return of Oct. 16.

Why the extension is stuck

The contract part of this is about Orlando's books. The Magic already have big long-term commitments to Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane. Adding a fifth significant deal for a player who has been a high-minutes reserve is a difficult proposition for a payroll already carrying that much long-term money.

President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman has said publicly that the Magic hope to extend Black, but he also acknowledged the team is in a tricky spot financially. That combination points to the most common outcome for players in Black's position: no extension now, restricted free agency next summer, and an offer sheet market that lets Orlando match.

The extension market around him has also moved. Brandin Podziemski's extension and the reported range for Brandon Miller have reset expectations for players coming off strong third seasons, and Black's camp has every reason to bet on a productive contract year rather than accept a discount now.

What Black brings

Black had the best season of his career in 2025-26, posting career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals while averaging roughly 15 points per game and doing it largely off the bench. He started when Suggs was out and was otherwise the engine of Orlando's second unit.

His value comes from his size at guard, his defense and his ability to handle the ball in a lineup built around two big forwards. For fantasy purposes, his steals and assists give him category value that is unusual for a bench player, and his scoring jump last season pushed him into standard-league relevance.

The ankle and the opener

The more pressing fantasy question is whether Black is ready for opening night. The Magic have not needed to rush him through a preseason, and the ankle sprain is reportedly not serious. But a player who has not done full-contact work two weeks into October is a candidate to be eased in, especially on a team with Suggs, Bane and Banchero all handling the ball.

If Black misses the opener or plays limited minutes, the backup ball-handling duties are spread across the second unit. That does not create a clear fantasy beneficiary, which is why the right approach is to treat Black as a slightly discounted draft pick rather than chase a replacement.

Contract-year players are an old fantasy cliché, but the logic holds: Black has every incentive to push his numbers this season to maximize his restricted free agency market. The ankle makes him a better value in drafts happening this weekend, because some managers will avoid him for health reasons.

Draft Black as a mid-round guard in standard leagues and slightly earlier in leagues that reward steals and assists. In dynasty, the extension stalemate does not change much, since restricted free agency gives Orlando the right to match.

Betting angle

For the Magic's season-long markets, Black's health matters at the margins. Orlando's depth is one of its strengths, and a healthy Black helps the second unit hold leads. Verdexed's NBA predictions page at NBA predictions will carry the model's game-by-game views once the regular season starts.

What's next

The deadline is 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19. Watch for two things before then: any late movement on an extension, which is always possible as deadlines force action, and whether Black gets onto the floor in Orlando's final preseason action. A preseason appearance would remove most of the opening-night uncertainty and make him a confident draft pick for the weekend.
