Jalen Duren Took Detroit's Five-Year, $200 Million Deal 90 Minutes Before the Deadline and Is a Top Fantasy Center Again

The Jalen Duren standoff is over. The All-NBA center agreed late Thursday to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract to return to the Detroit Pistons, his agent told ESPN. The deal came roughly 90 minutes before the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline for restricted free agents to accept their qualifying offers, and it ends a dispute that stretched across four months and into the start of training camp.

For fantasy managers who drafted Duren at a discount, or avoided him altogether, the risk that defined his offseason is gone. He is a Piston, he is paid, and he can start preparing for the season.

How it got done

Detroit's offer climbed steadily over the summer. Reports indicated it moved from around $175 million to $190 million and finally to $200 million, a figure that had been on the table for roughly two weeks before Duren accepted. A key sticking point was reportedly a weight clause attached to earlier versions of the offer; Detroit removed it as the deadline approached, and the final deal is a straight five-year contract with no options or incentives.

The alternative was historic. Duren could have signed his one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted that no player coming off an All-Star or All-NBA season had ever taken that route. Duren came close to becoming the first, but in the end he took the security.

Why Duren is worth it

Duren's breakout last season justified Detroit's commitment. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, made his first All-Star team and earned Third Team All-NBA honors, nearly doubling his scoring from the prior season. He is still just 22.

His game fits perfectly next to Cade Cunningham. Duren is an elite lob threat and offensive rebounder, and Cunningham's pick-and-roll creation feeds him easy looks at the rim. That partnership is the foundation of Detroit's offense, and both players are locked in long term now, alongside Ausar Thompson, who signed a five-year, $155 million extension earlier this offseason.

Fantasy fallout

Duren is a top-tier fantasy center again. The holdout risk, which kept his draft price depressed throughout September, is gone. In category leagues, he is a strong source of rebounds, field-goal percentage and blocks, and his scoring jump last season added points to the profile. Free-throw percentage remains the weak spot, so he fits best on punt-FT builds.

Points leagues reward his double-double consistency, and his usage in Detroit's offense should be stable. Treat him as an early-round pick in any draft held from today forward.

The ramp-up is the only caveat. Duren missed media day and the opening days of camp. He will need time to get into game shape, and Detroit may ease him in during the preseason. That is not a reason to fade him, but it could mean a quiet first week or two. Detroit does not open the regular season until Oct. 20, when it hosts the Boston Celtics in an afternoon game on NBC, which gives him nearly three weeks to get ready.

Cade Cunningham benefits from having his best pick-and-roll partner in place. There was never real doubt about Cunningham's fantasy value, but a full camp with Duren helps.

Detroit's backup centers lose value. Any frontcourt depth that had been getting extra camp reps in Duren's absence goes back to a reserve role, so do not draft them based on what they did in practice this week.

Betting angle

Detroit's season win total and playoff odds should firm up now that Duren is signed. A real chance existed that he would play on a one-year deal with an uncertain long-term future, or that the dispute would linger into the season and create distractions. That risk is gone.

For futures bettors, the Pistons' Eastern Conference outlook looks better than it did a week ago. Detroit has a young core under contract, an All-NBA center and a franchise point guard. If the market has not adjusted, there may be value on Detroit win totals or division futures.

What to do in your league

If your draft has not happened, move Duren back up your board. If you drafted him at a discount, congratulations: you got a top center at a bargain. And if a league-mate is still treating him as a holdout risk, now is the time to offer a trade before the market catches up.
