  • Matthews (9-11) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and no walks over five innings against the Giants. He struck out nine.

Matthews got roughed up early, giving up four runs in the first two frames, though he still racked up his highest strikeout total since July 31. In four September starts, the right-hander has posted a 6.87 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB across 18.1 innings. Overall, Matthews owns a 4.90 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 116:39 K:BB in 130.1 innings (23 starts) and is tentatively lined up to make his final start of the regular season Sunday against the Rangers.

  • Matthews didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-innings win over the Yankees, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

The 26-year-old right-hander put together one of his best performances of the season, firing 63 of 97 pitches for strikes, and Matthews left the mound in line for his 10th win of the year before both bullpens got squirrelly as the game went to 13 innings. The quality start was Matthews' 11th of the season, and three of them have come in his last five outings -- a stretch in which he's produced a 3.45 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB over 28.2 innings. He's set to make what could be his final start of 2026 on the road early next week in San Francisco.

  • Matthews (9-10) took the loss Wednesday as the Twins fell 7-2 to the Tigers, coughing up five runs on two hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out two.

Two runs in the first inning and three more in the third chased Matthews from the mound after just 58 pitches (27 strikes) in his shortest outing of the season, which was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes prior to the first pitch. It was a tough pill to swallow for the right-hander after he came in lasting at least five frames in eight straight starts, posting a 3.64 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB over that stretch. The loss drops Minnesota to 4.5 games back of a wild-card spot with 16 to play, and four other teams it would need to move past to make the postseason. Matthews lines up to make his next start at home next week against the Yankees.

Matthews now owns a 4.69 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 97:33 K:BB over 117 innings this season. The right-hander is scheduled to make his next start Friday against Cleveland.

  • Matthews (9-8) earned the win Sunday against the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five over a career-high 8.1 innings. He did not issue a walk.

Matthews retired the first 17 batters he faced and carried a shutout into the ninth inning despite generating only nine whiffs on 103 pitches. He allowed two singles in the final frame before exiting and watched from the dugout as one came around to score. Matthews has now earned a win in five consecutive starts and has been particularly sharp over his last three, allowing just three runs across 21 innings with a 16:2 K:BB during that span. He's scheduled for a rematch with the White Sox on Saturday.
