  • Manager Torey Lovullo announced Sunday that Gallen will work out of the bullpen moving forward, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.

The right-hander returned to the rotation Wednesday after missing two months due to an elbow injury, but he'll be shifted to a relief role after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. Michael Soroka piggybacked Gallen in that game and will re-enter the rotation Tuesday against the Marlins. It's been a career-worst campaign for Gallen, who has a 6.22 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 62:33 K:BB across 101.1 innings.

  • Gallen allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out one over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Royals on Wednesday.

Gallen threw 42 of 68 pitches for strikes in his first big-league action in two months after an absence due to right elbow inflammation. The right-hander struggled heavily prior to his stint on the injured list, and it remains to be seen how he'll fare against a tougher opponent. On the year, he has a 6.22 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 62:33 K:BB with 19 home runs allowed across 101.1 innings. He worked in tandem with Michael Soroka for this game, but it's unclear how the workload will be set when this spot in the rotation comes up against Miami next week.

  • The Diamondbacks activated Gallen (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Gallen will rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation with a start Wednesday in Kansas City after missing the past two months due to right elbow inflammation. The right-hander built up to four innings and 60 pitches during a simulated game Friday, so he should be capable of around 70 pitches. Michael Soroka (shoulder) was also activated from the IL and will work behind Gallen in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Gallen (elbow) will return from the 60-day injured list and start Wednesday's game against the Royals, Jody Jackson of DBacks.tv reports.

Wednesday will mark Gallen's first appearance of the second half, as the 31-year-old has been on the shelf since July 12 due to right elbow inflammation. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in a rehab game at Triple-A Reno on Aug. 30 before building up to four innings and 60 pitches during a sim game Friday. Rather than waiting for Gallen to get fully stretched back out, the Diamondbacks will instead have him make what will likely be an abbreviated start Wednesday before turning the ball over to right-hander Michael Soroka (shoulder), who will also be activated from the IL to pitch in the series finale in Kansas City.

  • Gallen (elbow) threw 60 pitches and four innings in a simulated game Friday, MLB.com reports.

This was the second significant outing for Gallen, who began a rehab assignment last Sunday. The Diamondbacks plan to activate him for the series against the Royals which begins Monday. Gallen's schedule puts him in line for a possible start Wednesday.

  • Gallen (elbow) will throw a simulated game Friday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Both Gallen and Michael Soroka (shoulder) will toss sim games Friday with the hope of returning to the team next week. Gallen has been sidelined since July 7 with right elbow inflammation. He made a rehab start with Triple-A Reno over the weekend, allowing a hit and walking two with two strikeouts across 1.2 frames. Gallen is aiming for 60 pitches Friday.
