  • Matsui will make $6.5 million in 2027 with the Padres after electing not to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

The 31-year-old delivered the best campaign of his career in 2026, posting a 1.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 68:36 K:BB across 64 regular-season innings. Matsui also has a $7 million player option for 2028, though that will convert to a club option if he requires Tommy John surgery or has an elbow injury that causes 130 consecutive days on the IL, per Spotrac.com.

  • Matsui picked up the save in Sunday's 6-4 win over San Francisco. He allowed a hit and no walks while striking out one over a scoreless inning.

Entering with a two-run cushion, Matsui worked a scoreless ninth inning to secure his first save of the season and a sweep for San Diego. The southpaw has quietly put together a quality campaign with a 1.98 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 63:32 K:BB in 59 innings, though the closer role remains firmly in the hands of Mason Miller, who was presumably unavailable after pitching in both of the previous two games.

  • Matsui (2-1) earned the win over San Francisco on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over three scoreless innings.

San Diego deployed a bit of an unusual pitching progression, opening with reliever Bradgley Rodriguez for one inning before going to Matsui for three frames and finishing with veteran starter German Marquez for the final five . All three hurlers pitched well, and Matsui got the victory with three scoreless frames that included just one hit. The left-hander completed three innings for the first time as a major-leaguer, throwing 49 pitches (32 strikes). Matsui isn't seeing a ton of high-leverage work, but he's having his best big-league season to date, posting a 2.38 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 45:24 K:BB while collecting six holds through 31 appearances spanning 41.2 innings.

  • Matsui tossed 2.1 innings in relief against Atlanta on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three batters.

Matsui has gone at least two frames seven times through 18 appearances so far this season after doing so in just five instances across 61 regular-season outings last year. The shift in role has been working well for the southpaw, as he carries a 1.67 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 27 total innings. Matsui doesn't have any holds, wins or saves, which severely dents his fantasy utility, though he has been more effective at missing bats this season. The Japanese reliever has fanned at least one batter in every one of his appearances thus far, and his 29.0 percent strikeout rate is a vast improvement over his 22.4 percent mark last season.

  • The Padres reinstated Matsui (groin) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday.

The Japanese left-hander has been on the shelf all season after sustaining a groin strain early in spring training, but he's now fully cleared after a month-long rehab assignment, during which he posted a 4.97 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 12.2 innings. Matsui should step into a middle-relief role for the Padres after posting a 3.98 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 61:33 K:BB across 61 regular-season appearances last year.

  • Matsui (groin) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan San Diegoreports.

Matsui is nearing his 2026 debut after suffering a left groin strain in February. He was a solid reliever for the Padres a year ago, collecting a 3.98 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with a 61:33 K:BB and one save across 63.1 regular-season innings.
