  • Dion (2-2) picked up the win in Wednesday's 4-2 victory over the Tigers, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over two relief innings. He struck out four.

Brad Lord took on the largest workload during a bullpen day for the Nationals, tossing 3.1 scoreless frames ahead of Dion, but the southpaw was the pitcher of record when his team broke open a scoreless tie with a three-run sixth inning. Dion has been a versatile option since being acquired from the Guardians at the trade deadline, and over 14 appearances (one start) and 28 innings for the Nats he's produced a 3.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB with two wins, a save and a hold.

  • Dion earned his first career save after retiring the only batter he faced in Saturday's 8-5 extra-innings win over the Cardinals.

Dion inherited a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the 11th and needed just two pitches to get the job done, retiring Leo Bernal on a flyout to right field to secure the win. This was Dion's first major-league save, although he hasn't been the Nationals' most reliable reliever lately, giving up multiple earned runs in three of his last seven appearances dating back to Aug. 26. Still, he owns a 3.92 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB in 20.2 innings over his last 10 outings.

  • Dion dropped to 1-2 on the season and was charged with a blown save in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Dodgers after giving up three earned runs on two hits and two walks across two innings. He struck out three batters.

Dion tossed three scoreless innings while making his first MLB start in his previous appearance Aug. 31 against the Marlins, but his usage in relief Sunday likely takes him out of the mix to start when the fifth spot in the Washington rotation comes up again this week. Tasked with protecting a 5-4 lead when he entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, Dion walked the first batter he faced but then struck out the next three batters he faced to close out the frame. He then retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth, but he was stuck with the loss after surrendering a base hit and a walk before Mookie Betts took him yard for a three-run blast to give Los Angeles the lead.

  • Dion took a no-decision against the Marlins on Monday, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk in three innings. He struck out one.

Making his first career major-league start Monday, Dion fared as well as the Nationals could have hoped for. It was somewhat surprising to see the left-hander be lifted after throwing just 37 pitches (26 strikes), considering he's tossed as many as 64 for Washington this season. He's set to finish a two-start week this weekend against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, where he'll bring a strong 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 42:10 K:BB over 37.1 innings.

  • Dion is slated to start Monday's game against the Marlins at Nationals Park.

After being deployed as a bulk reliever behind an opener in four of his last five appearances, Dion will get the chance to make his first MLB start Monday. Since the 26-year-old lefty hasn't tossed more than 64 pitches in any of his big-league appearances to date, he'll likely be operating with a restricted workload and could struggle to reach the five innings he would need to hit to qualify for a win. Acquired from the Guardians on Aug. 3, Dion has pitched effectively since joining the Nationals, turning in a 2.45 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB over 14.2 innings.

  • Dion struck out four and allowed one hit and two walks over three innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Marlins.

Brad Lord made his third consecutive appearance as a starter but was once again held under three innings, clearing the way for Dion to follow him in bulk relief. Dion has looked sharp in each of his three outings behind Lord, yielding no runs and giving up just two hits while posting a 12:3 K:BB in 10.1 innings during that stretch. The Nationals are likely to eventually get a potential starter in DJ Herz (elbow) back from the 60-day injured list in September, but until that happens, the Lord and Dion tandem could remain in place when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up.
