  • The Pirates optioned Dotel to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

After giving up two runs (one earned) in three innings Friday, Dotel will be cast out of the Pirates' bullpen in favor of a fresh arm in the form of Hunter Barco. Dotel will finish the MLB season with a 4.46 ERA and 1.37 WHIP alongside a 41:16 K:BB over 42.1 innings.

  • Dotel will serve as the Pirates' opening pitcher for Thursday's game against the Brewers, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.

Dotel will be making his second start of the season, but he's likely to be in line for a limited workload. He retired two batters out of the bullpen just two days earlier and hasn't covered more than three innings in any appearance in the majors or minors since May 10. Khristian Curtis will be available on six days' rest to pitch out of the bullpen and could be called upon to cover multiple frames once Dotel exits the contest.

  • Dotel (1-5) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on four hits over two innings as the Pirates were routed 12-2 by the Cubs. He struck out one without walking a batter.

Pittsburgh went with a bullpen game to fill the spot of Braxton Ashcraft (arm) in the rotation, and Dotel was the first of three pitchers to work multiple innings at Wrigley Field as all three got tagged for at least three runs. Dotel has been relatively effective in a long-relief role since the All-Star break, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB over his last nine appearances and 16.1 innings.

  • Dotel is slated to start Friday's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Dominic Campbell of SI.com reports.

Stepping into the rotation spot vacated by the injured Braxton Ashcraft (arm), Dotel will likely operate as more of an opener Friday rather than a traditional starter. Dotel will be taking the hill on two days' rest and hasn't covered more three innings in any appearance in the majors or minors since the All-Star break, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the batting order. Khristian Curtis and Antwone Kelly are both well-rested arms capable of covering multiple frames out of the bullpen once Dotel's day is done.

  • The Pirates recalled Dotel from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Aiden Stepansky of MLB.com reports.

The Pirates desperately need a fresh arm to cover innings in the bullpen, and Dotel should be first in line for that assignment. He's collected a 4.71 ERA and 31:13 K:BB over 28.2 frames covering 15 appearances out of the big-league bullpen this season. The Pirates could call on him to cover multiple innings in Thursday's game against the Giants once opener Lake Bachar exits the game.

  • The Pirates optioned Dotel to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.

The 23-year-old has bounced back and forth between Pittsburgh and Indy this season, and he owns a 1-4 record, 4.71 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB at the big-league level. The Pirates elevated Hunter Barco to replace Dotel on the active roster.
