Latest news

  • The Cubs released Blach on Saturday.

Blach was briefly up in the big leagues with the Cubs in May, tossing three scoreless innings of relief in an appearance against the Brewers before being designated for assignment the next day. He ultimately cleared waivers and elected free agency before re-signing with the Cubs on a minor-league deal a few days later. During his time at Triple-A Iowa this season, Blach posted a 6.36 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 58 innings in 15 appearances (nine starts).

  • The Cubs re-signed Blach to a minor-league contract Wednesday.

Blach elected free agency earlier this week after being removed from the Cubs' 40-man roster, but he's now back in the organization on a new contract. The lefty threw three scoreless frames in his lone appearance for Chicago and will give the organization swingman depth at Triple-A Iowa.

  • Blach elected to become a free agent Monday.

Blach had been removed from the Cubs' 40-man roster and will test out free agency rather than accept an outright assignment. The lefty could wind up re-signing on a minor-league deal, but he will have the ability to negotiate with all teams.

  • The Cubs designated Blach for assignment Tuesday.

Blach spun three scoreless innings out of the Cubs' bullpen Monday against the Brewers in his lone appearance for the club, and his reward is being jettisoned from the 26-man and 40-man rosters. The lefty will likely clear waivers, and if that happens, he would have the ability to decline an outright assignment and become a free agent.

  • Blach tossed three scoreless innings of relief in Monday's 9-3 loss to the Brewers. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

Blach had his contract selected from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, and he made his team debut a day later. The lefty, who last appeared in the majors for Colorado back in 2024, looked good, albeit in a low-leverage spot with the Cubs already down six runs when he entered the contest. Blach replaced Javier Assad on the roster for now, though the latter could be back in short order after a stint in Iowa.

  • The Cubs selected Blach's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.

Blach joined the organization on a minor-league deal in mid-April and has gotten into five games (three starts) for Iowa, posting a 5.23 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings. He'll likely work in long relief out of the bullpen with the big-league club. Reliever Hunter Harvey (triceps) was moved to the 60-day IL to make room for Blach, while Javier Assad was optioned to Triple-A.
