  • The Guardians declined their side of Armstrong's $8 million mutual option for the 2027 season Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

    Armstrong appeared in 41 games for Cleveland this year, turning in a 4.58 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with a 34:19 K:BB across 35.1 innings. The Guardians didn't deem his performance worthy of bringing him back for $8 million, so they will instead pay him a $1.5 million buyout and let him enter the open market.

  • Armstong will serve as the Guardians' opener Monday in Game 6 of the ALCS versus the Rays, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

    It will be the third appearance in as many days for Armstrong, who tossed 1.1 scoreless frames in Game 5 and another scoreless inning in Game 4. He's been lights out this postseason, allowing only two hits with a 6:0 K:BB over 7.2 scoreless frames.

    Games 4 and 5 will both be pushed back a day as a result. Armstrong had been slated to work as an opener in Game 4 after logging 5.1 shutout innings to begin the postseason, and the Guardians will stand pat with their plan to use him in the first inning of Saturday's contest, per Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.   • The Guardians reinstated Armstrong (calf) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

    Armstrong landed on the 15-day IL with a left calf strain in late July and was later transferred to the 60-day IL. He has now been cleared to return after making four rehab appearances at Triple-A, though Armstrong figures to be eased back in with some low-leverage innings to close the campaign. The veteran righty has regressed in a major way this year, posting a 4.91 ERA and 1.45 WHIP after putting up a 2.31 ERA and 0.81 WHIP last regular season.

    Armstrong was initially placed on the shelf July 25 due to a left calf strain before being transferred to the 60-day IL less than two weeks later.
