OUT

Out · expected back around Feb 1

It would have been a great story for the left-hander to rejoin the Rays during their playoff run after going down with forearm soreness in early September, but it's not a major surprise he's been ruled out given that there's been no indication he's close to game ready. McClanahan also spent time on the IL earlier in the season due to a back issue, limiting him to 24 starts. He posted a 3.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 106:39 K:BB across 118 innings this season and is entering his penultimate year of arbitration eligibility in 2027.

  • McClanahan (forearm) won't be available to pitch during the rest of the postseason, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Manager Kevin Cash indicated that McClanahan should be fully ready for the start of spring training, per Topkin.

  • Manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that McClanahan (forearm) will not be included on the Rays' ALDS roster, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McClanahan had already been ruled out for the rest of the regular season due to tightness in his left forearm, and although the Rays will get a bye during the Wild Card Series, he still won't be ready to pitch by the time Tampa Bay begins its postseason run. Cash noted that it's still possible McClanahan will be available for the ALCS if the Rays advance, though they will wait to see where the left-hander is at in his throwing progression at that point before making a decision.

  • McClanahan (forearm) will not return before the conclusion of the regular season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McClanahan played catch Friday, and manager Kevin Cash described it as a "good" session for the southpaw. McClanahan has been sidelined since Sept. 4 while nursing left forearm tightness, and he will now shift his sights on potentially being available for Tampa Bay during the postseason.

  • Rays manager Kevin Cash said recently that McClanahan (forearm) has resumed playing catch but still has "a long way to go" before returning to the active roster, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McClanahan has been out since early September with left forearm tightness, and while Cash is "encouraged" the southpaw is progressing, the manager is unsure whether the hurler will make it back before the end of the regular season. If McClanahan does make a start later this month, it would likely be during the final week of the regular season and would involve a pitch count.

  • Tampa Bay placed McClanahan on the 15-day injured list Friday with left forearm tightness.

McClanahan will make his second trip to the IL in the last three months after allowing four earned runs over five innings Thursday against the Rangers. In his first big-league action since 2023, McClanahan owns a 10-7 record this season with a 3.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 106:39 K:BB over 118 innings. With the 29-year-old on the shelf, the Rays recalled Alex Cook from Triple-A Durham to bolster the bullpen.

  • McClanahan (10-7) took the loss against Texas on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three batters over five innings.

McClanahan was strong to begin the game, starting with three scoreless frames. However, the southpaw gave up four runs across his final two innings, with the big blow being a Corey Seager two-run homer. McClanahan continues to fall short of six frames -- he's yet to reach that mark over seven starts since the All-Star break. He's fallen off a bit in the second half with a 4.78 ERA across 32 innings, though he's posted a 24:11 K:BB and 1.09 WHIP during that span.
